He's located at the top level of Naxxanar. The teleporter into Naxxanar is at (86,28). Once inside Naxxanar, there will be a blue teleporter right above you. Jump while you stand on the blue teleporter and you'll be on the higher level of Naxxanar. In this higher level, you can find him on the northwest platform.

Soloable if you have a shadow resist set or are extremely well geared. Chain casts 2k shadow bolts, big killer is Soul Deflection that he will periodically cast, you can kill yourself very quickly if you don't pay attention to when he does this.

The quest-giving NPC version of Prince Valanar is found in the Death's Breach area of the Scarlet Enclave during the instanced Death Knight Starting Experience.

The zone has several "Phases," meaning that it appears different depending on which quests a player has completed. During Phase 1, Prince Valanar can be found on the northern side of Death Breach under a tent. During Phases 2 and 3 he is found on the southern side of Death breach standing on a little stage, or at the side of the Lich King.

This guy was hella hard to take down on my spriest, but I managed by kiting him around the corner when he casted Shadow Bolt and just healed through soul drain. A good tip for all ranged is to pull him and turn back and run to corner, and just keep LoSing him till he dies from dots/instant casts

I soloed him as a 72 Unholy Death Knight. I just went in there with my ghoul, then summoned my gargoyle, waited until I was at ~85% health and used a health potion. Then I went through a few rotations and at about 5% health I used death pact and resummoned a new ghoul. Next I died.. but he had 2000 health left, and I killed him easily in ghoul form.

stop doing damage when he shoots out the purple facemelter, its Soul Deflection, you'll just do the damage to yourself. instead, as soon as you see him start casting hit your bandage macro.

Death Knights can also take him down but it takes a little extra work, you need to periodically stop all DPS including your ghouls. Unholy DK's will eat some of the Disease damage when he's casting Soul Deflection so you might need a potion as this dont allow you to use bandages.

He can do some nasty damage bursts between instant spell & melee, so keep up the IBF & Bone Shield when you can also make sure you use Anti-Magic Shell & Anti-Magic Zone.

When your health goes low, pots are on cooldown and things look really bad - sacriface your ghoul . You might still win, depending how lucky crits he's doing which can be from 1.6k up to 2.3k .

Soloable as a Holy Priest quite easily. Cleared both sides of him just to be sure and made sure to avoid hitting him when he used the Soul Deflection (although I screwed up a few times, no big deal) and kept a Lightwell next to me at all times. My gear was in a mix of T4 and some PvPgear (to boost my HP to just over 10k).

Just shield up when you've lost 3k HPs, hit a lightwell and carefully nuke away. Used Shadowfiend and one Super Mana Potion. He was way easier than his henchmen below even though they could be feared.

Just solo'd him. 72 DK, 13k HPs unbuffed, 10k armor unbuffed. Used all my cooldowns, backed away when he was using Soul Deflection - that was key. I kept using Death Strike (also have the glyph - +2% health) and kept my diseases on him. Took the shadow bolts but used Mind Freeze when I could - not sure that it worked - don't think it did. He got me down to 2k health when he died. I didn't use corners, like I just read lol... straight tank and spank but used Icebound Fortitude, Horn of Winter and Unholy Blight for the extra damage. I just saw that I could've used Anti-Magic Shell - haha forgot about that. If I had, it would've been easier.

Soloed as lvl70 enha shaman, 7k hp, 5k mana and about 1200ap. Had to use all my cooldown's to burn him down but wasnt too hard.

73 Affliction Warlock: Very easy to solo!

Simply DoT him up with Haunt, Immo, UA, Corr, SL, CoA...
And then break his line of sight by wall humping whenever he is casting a Shadowbolt!
Refresh DoTs as needed, and drain tank or refresh DoTs through his channeled spell.

I didn't bother using Shadow Ward, Healthstone and Soulstone
(because I assumed he would be kited...) but it may help if you are relatively undergeared.

For Warriors:

His Soul blast can NOT be spell reflected. I tried taking him down by dual wield spamming revenge and going 1h+shield to spell reflecting his shadow bolts and also bandaging during his leech ray. Barely got out alive.

Very easy to solo as lvl71 retribution paladin. Pretty basic gear from quests except for bloodied arcanite reaper and polished spaulders of valor.

The fight itself went something like this:

Pull near an corner, dps and move behind an wall when the shadowbolt is about to go off. It gets out of line of sight and doesn't launch. Heal with flash of light when art of war is up and if you have lost health. Upon the soul deflection, heal yourself to full health and be ready to dps again. That's it. I only had to use avenging wrath for some extra damage and divine plea for mana.

Very hard to solo for a Mutilate Rogue. I am level 74, BT geared and the best I could do was to get him to 9% after 7-8 tries. Then a DK joined in on my next try and we got him down. Would have probably killed him after 8+x tries, but a real challenge nevertheless.

He is very anti-mutirogue as he has immunity to all kind of stuns and interrupts (yes, to all abilities listed above by Blaine0311 plus also to Kick), you can't DoT him with Rupture or Deadly Poison due to his Soul Deflection meaning you can't Envenom and you can't make much use out of Evasion as most of his damage is magical. So basically damagewise you're options are down to keeping SnD up and Eviscerating.

Could be done probably much easier by wall-dancing and getting out of LoS when he casts Shadowbolt, but I am too stubborn to get things down the hard way.

72 Affliction Lock:

Similar to my method for luthion and vanthryn; Send in the VW and use his Suffering ability right away. However for this fight, apply no dots whatsoever. Counter-intuitive though it may be, his reflective ability will put you down early if you're ill-equipped.

Continuously apply health funnel to your VW whenever the prince is using his soul ability. When he is not, or he is casting a SB, fire off as many SBs as you can without letting the VW die. Also remember to reapply Suffering if it comes back up before you down the mob. Once he gets within 10k or less feel free to go nuts and apply your dots if you like, but you still run the risk of having them reflected back at you. Without using any dots I downed him in 2 minutes without ever taking any damage.

Found him very easy as a level 71 unholy death knight with glyphed death stirke. Didn't notice that I was hitting myself during soul deflection, just thought it was a fairly random channeled damage spell he was doing. Keep diseases up, and death strike like you mean it.

Soloable as a 70 ret paladin in full leveling gear. Simply switch on shadow protection aura and go to town. Obviously don't attack during his damage reflect, just heal during this time period. Didn't need to use Lay on Hands but others might. Used a mana potion halfway through.

Did it as in a group of 2 Unholy/frost DK´s pretty easy when the unholy got low HP i aggroed and he bandaged when i was low he grabbed aggro and i bandaged.
He wasnt that hard it was the Soul defletion that was kinda anoying cause i didn´t pay attention when he did it (never realised how much dmg i did before i used frost strike and critted 3,2 k on myself xD)
Solo able as a blood DK especially if ur a dual wielding DK... Blood worms FTW

I went as a level 80 Fury Warrior in full 25-man gear and here is my report. I died the first go around before I read up on his damage reflect and instagibbed myself. The second time I knew about his abilities and got him down as fast as possible with cooldowns and when I saw him channeling his reflect I immediately hit escape and moved back. Sad thing is that I had Deep Wounds ticking for 1500 and the shield reflected that back at me so I died to my own DoT.

I don't know if his shield reflects all DoTs or if I just had an exception, possibly because my DoT is physical damage. Either way, the story is that even if you're a lv. 80 completely decked out, you have to watch for his reflection or you will kill yourself really, really quickly.

Pretty easy solo as a 72 Balance druid,
Opened up with a force of nature then just continued to nuke him with starfire until he casts soul deflection, if you can be bothered unaggro your trees but i cba and when you get low on health / mana heal / innervate

Easy soloable at level 74 on elemental shaman, just put grounding totem down as soon as you can. Easy to heal through his spells, killed him with 50% mana and ended up full on HP, didn't use BL / Earth elemental/ Fire elemental. Piece of cake.
Also soloed as 72 prot paly.

Hm...i just wonder where are the posts: SOLOED AS A HUNTER? Me tryed on SV spec. The first 2 minibosses were hard as hell, but i managed to kill em with as many CC used as i had, with a spider pet with ability Web. But the last boss was immun to all kind of hunter tricks, and my pet isn't for tanking - so he +.+ very soon-, all i could do was FD, rezz my pet and leave the place

Was really surprised at how easy he was as a 72 Enhancement shammy in blue/green quest gear. Used LoS to pull him around the corner from where he stands, dropped Fire Elemental totem (for burst) popped Feral Spirit, Bloodlust and just tried to DPS him down as quickly as possible. Only had to heal once or twice, but He was dead before the wolves despawned.

Hope this gives someone the confidence to try and solo it. :D

Soloed as a 74 BM hunter with the greens/blues from quests. Used most of the CDs and my trinkets. But no traps or pots or bandage. Easier than i thougth from the beginning. Just keep your Mend Pet up and the 2k bolts won't even be noticed. And watch out for the soul deflection, nearly died :P

To the Hunters having trouble with this boss, here's a quick step by step on how to beat him.

First of all, you'll have to use a lot of Line of Sight tactics, which comes to your advantage in this fight since he has a cast time. To be able to do this, ensure that you clear trash around him and between him and one ramp going down a floor level.

You will need:
1. About 5 bandages. The higher the better.
2. Having a mana potion helps, but isn't needed.
3. Patience
4. I haven't tried as any other spec, but BM seems to be ideal.

Pet Settings:
1. Set your pet on passive
2. Ideally, you want your pet to have some sort of defense or recovery mechanism Last stand, Turtle's shield wall, Lick Your Wounds, etc. I did mine with Lick your Wounds, cat. Set these abilities as non-auto cast; you want to trigger them yourself.
3. If your pet has a DoT (ex, cats), turn it off.

1. Set yourself in a good position within range, but as farthest as you can get.
2. Cast mend pet right before you pull, drink, then as soon as you get full mana then pull the boss with concussive shot. The reason you use concussive shot, even though he's immune, is to pull with little threat.
3. Run back towards the ramp right next to the wall, but don't Line of Sight him. The boss will adjust at range to cast his shadow bolts. As soon as he is positioned send your pet in.
4. Immediately pop all of your CDs. Ensure Mend Pet is always up.
*****DO NOT USE SERPENT STING*******
5. DPS him as hard as you can while he's casting shadow bolts. As soon as he casts soul deflection, bring your pet back, then line of sight towards the platform just before the slope on the ramp. How far you go down the ramp is up to you; longer distance can give your pet more time to heal; but you delay the fight.
6. Pop Aspect of Viper and then bandage (this is why you don't use DoTs) your pet to full life. If bandage debuff is still on your pet, simply mend pet to give your pet a larger life pool. Bandage yourself if needed. Prince Valanar should stop half way of your bandage and head to you.
7. Once he reaches your pet, send him in again and switch back to Aspect of Hawk (Or stay in viper if you're low on mana).
8. Repeat 4-7 until he is dead.

When to use your pet-survival CDs:
There will be times when your pet will get dangerously low and mend pet will not be enough, this is when you pop your pet-survival CD. In addition, after you LoS and mend your pet, there may be times when you didn't get enough distance to let mend pet tick enough times. Use it then too.

Chances are, you won't get this in one try and you will need a few attempts. I got mine on the third attempt after one set of respawns. If you mess up, simply get some distance, feign death and restart.

Soloable as a Frostmage. Play with LoS when he cast his Shadowbolt. Keep Fire Blast on CD and let your Water Elemental do the Damage. Used a Pot, glyphed Evocation and Cold Snap to burn him down. Buff yourself with Magic Armor and Dampen Magic!

Tips for shamans :

You can use Grounding Totem to counter his Shadowbolt;
However, Grounding Totem will NOT work for his instant cast;
Even Damage over Time (Flame Shock's DoT) deals damage to you while he channels Soul Deflection, watch out !
Your Elementals (especially the Fire one) can kill themselves pretty fast while under Soul Deflection debuff
If you are Elemental and cast a Lightning Bolt / Lava Burst and the Prince starts casting Soul Deflection before the missile hits him, you might receive the damage. I learned this the hard way when I killed myself under the effect of Bloodlust

It's a pretty easy fight as Elemental. You don't need Elementals nor Bloodlust. Hit him and ground his Shadow Bolt, heal yourself when he channels Soul Deflection.

Very easy to solo as a level 76 Destro Lock(Don't know if level had to do with it, but I guess so.). Had Void out on passive and sent in shadow bolt to apply the crit debuff it leaves, the spammed Chaos Bolt/Incinerate. When ever he was casting a shadow bolt I would hit Shadow Ward and keep smacking at him, stopping when he soul deflects. When he was at 13k or so health, I sacrificed Void. Applied all dots and started spamming Chaos Bolt, Incinerate and Soul Fire.

Now note: I'm still in T4/Kara gear, so I'm not super geared in T6 and such, I'm in crummy gear and his shadow bolts were hitting me 66% of the time. But I applied shadow ward pre-fight and waited until Cool down was at 15 seconds and sent off a Shadow Bolt then Soul Fire for a crit. Then hit Chaos Bolt and by that time I was hit by his Shadow Bolt and I could reapply Shadow Ward. Another Shadow Bolt and then deflection. After deflection Ward was back up so I hit it and went Shadow Bolt > Chaos Bolt > Incinerate > Incinerate > repeat adding in an occasional Shadow Ward when I could. Over all easy fight, I should of tried it at a lower level to see if it was still as easy.

soloed as a level 71 holy paladin in northrend quest greens (stam scroll didn't hurt, though). just stay close, keep meleeing with seal of wisdom to keep the mana up. seal of righteousness might be better for damage, but i find that for soloing elites, you can beat just about any of them by outlasting them. i went ret aura, but probably should have switched to shadow resistance.

use instant casts when possible, but you probably want to avoid consecration for its high mana cost and in case he switches to soul deflection. when he does, step back out of melee range, and throw a few heals. just eat the shadow bolts and melee, and heal through it. to this end, i recommend a heal-through macro, so you don't have to change your target from valanar. handy in lots of other situations, too. for example:

#showtooltip Flash of Light
/cast Flash of Light

healing should be your priority over your damage spells (its ok for holy shock to be off cooldown a few seconds), since he'll die eventually if you can outlast him. his shadow bolts will do about as much damage as your flash of light can heal, but you can cast them faster.

Solo'd as a 72 Feral Druid. Was in Cat whole time. Just heal yourself from shadowbolts, and watch for the Soul Deflection. Other than that, its straight forward. Had to innervate for mana at the very end of the fight for the last set of heals before final burst.

Soloed as a 74 BM hunter without LoS'ing.

- Make sure you kill the two guys around him AND the pat that circles by him. Distraction from one mob is all it takes to break your rhythm and get you killed.
- My turtle was able to tank him no problem, since I had Mend Pet, Silverback, Scorpid Sting, and Shell Shield all working to minimize damage.
- 60k is a ton of hp. I didn't even bother blowing cooldowns til he was low on health. Patience and stability win this fight.
- Obviously, look out for Soul Deflection. Use the time to heal your pet, sneak in a few seconds of Viper, etc.

Even if your DPS isn't stellar, if you can consistently keep your pet alive and avoid his Soul Deflection, it's simply a waiting game.

Soloed him yesterday on my Blood DK at level 70. Wearing only some wotlk greens (enchanted), BC Adamantite Battlegear (enchanted and gemmed) and some original DK blue quality armor (boots, trinket and ring).

The main thing is to keep the diseases up at all times and use Death strikes for heals. I also used Rune Tap (improved) twice and Mark of Blood (once). Icebound Fortitude helped too. I didn't use any healing potions (forgot to bring some), no bandages (had my own dots because of Soul Deflection) and I didnt use my ghoul (to fight and sacrifice). I also had +20 str BC food buff. I was fighting in Frost Presence of course.
I didn't care about the shadow bolts and ended up with about 4k out of 11k hp left (could have more, but I didnt nuke his last 5-10k hp)

The main thing is as above posters said: Stop attacking when he uses Soul Deflection.

PS. I think that npc's info is wrong. He has around 120k hp and not 61k as it says here. Or is it because of the fact that you only have to do 50% damage so you can still complete the quest if you die (if helper npc stays alive)? Im almost 100% that he had 120k :S

I didn't see anyone else mention it so I thought I should. If you die you have to respawn back at the village graveyard, you can't run to your body. Probably because of the teleporter. Very irritating. You don't incur the damage or resurrection sickness penalty though.

Soloed as 72 retribution paladin. Avoided using consecration. Other than that, attack while he attacks, heal while he uses soul deflection. I also had shadow resistance aura up and took a Gift of Arthas potion.

Just soloed as a 73 Feral Druid (quest greens and blues) in bear form. Do not lacerate! - the bleed damage will reflect on you when he casts soul deflection. When he starts the deflection - stop attacking and heal, then switch back into bear form (by that time he should have stopped attacking). You may have to use a mana pot, but basically I finished with almost full health.

Easy as hell!
Casted Shadow Protection on myself. Put DoTs on him.
When he casted Soul Deflection I healed myself up.
He didn't went melee! Don't know why.
Used Dispersion when I ran out of mana.
Kept DoTs up and casted Mind Blast and used my wand in between.
That's it!

Took me 2 tries bubbled,used rejuv pot, and Loh, but i finally got him...

Like as anyone else says don't attack on the ray thingy,umm... pulled him to a crack in the wall and let thasarrian tank him....and then jumped back on the ledge and beat him to death...and I didnt ever get aggro back and it was GG

soloed as a horde, 72 arcane mage.
started off with all cd's ap / pom. whenever he got close to cast a bolt, arcane barrage and hide behind a wall, and get out asap after failed cast so he doesn't run too far towards you. refresh mana shield whenever it goes down, mana gem to sustain mana etc.
bandage at the soulchannel ability, evocate if bandage is on cd.
rince and repeat, and pray for no respawns and it's doable :)

another thing that can be a bit tricky is when he uses soulleech again allmost right after the first one. If you cast anything on him, you hurt urself, and if you don't do anything, he resets (had a few of those). So make sure you allways cast something on him, may it be lowrank spells, or whatever you can come up with

The other elites you need to kill for this quest weren't too hard to kill as lvl 73 shadow priest even though they hit quite hard, and I was expecting this fella to considerably harder as I had soloed him twice before, both times being the hardest of the three. However he's surprisingly easy, I used to hug the walls to avoid the shadow bolts but in the end they didn't pose too much of a threat so I just stood there like a moron, only taking some distance when he was channeling Soul Deflection.

Put Shadow Protection on, use your shield every time it's off cooldown, put Vampiric Embrace on him, keep Vampiric Touch, Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague up unless he is casting Soul Deflection, if that is the case just wait until the very end of channeling and put the DOTs back up. When you have about 60% of your mana left, use Dispersion (helps to avoid damage too if you use it during Soul Deflection or when he's casting Shadow Bolt). If you need more mana after that, use Shadowfiend.
After he's at melee range you can gain some distance while he's casting, especially when he's using Soul Deflection. Also, you should put Shadow Word: Pain up only after you have 5x Shadow Weaving for maximum DPS.

Easily soloed as a level 72 paladin, i have pretty good gear so that must have helped. If you dont have good gear get some other people to help. Also if your not paying attention that soul deflection is gonna hit ya hard. So good luck!

Can be soloed by a level 74 retri pala. It was a bit tricky but with the running behind walls thing that I read here it was actually not that hard as one might think. Really have to think about the soul deflection because that can really hurt your face XP. Other then that.

Run behind walls when shadowbolt is cast.
Heal when needed.
Use pots if needed.
And use shield if needed.

Just soloed by a Shadow Priest

Cast PW;S and PoM on me before the fight

Opened up with VT>MB>MF

then afetr 5 stacks of SHadow Weaving I put D and SW:P

I almost never took damage except the soul link thingy, Just keep LoS him when he casts spells, I poped fiend at 40% mana then faded so he was attacking him for 10 seconds, healed up and went shadow form again and started nuking

Used dispersion when I had all my dots on him and he used soul link (this was when he was about 30%)

I woudn't suggets using SW:D because he might cast his soul link and you take double damage

Cam out with 30% mana and 80% because I started nuking really hard on the last 10k hp and he used soul link towards the very end.

Good Luck soloing him everyone, easy fight

The best way to do this (if you dont have a pet, or if your pet dies) seems to be getting aggro then running to the stairs where you first enter the top. Then you hide under the stairs and hit him with your instants whenever he comes close. Then you go to the other side when he gets within line of sight. Thassarian actually does decent dps when given the chance. Make sure to heal when he casts soul deflection (if you can). I honestly dont know if this works for every class, but it does for a paladin at least.

Just soloed as a lvl 71 ele shaman its real simple fight here is what i did
kill all the patrol guards and the 2 right beside him they dont aggro him
get behind him and lay down all your totems i reccommend using grounding totem
burn him down until he shoots the purple beam at you (soul deflection)
once he is casting soul deflection this is the time for you to heal yourself
flame shock's dot will hurt you, not much ,but it will
remember to keep putting down grounding totem every time you can
dont bother with the elemental totems especially fire cause they will just kill themselves if he puts soul deflection on them
in the end it will probably have taken longer to read this post than it will the actual fight :)

I soloed him pretty easily as an Afflction Warlock (L73) using my Void Walker to tank him.

I set my VW on him, and used Haunt when he wasn't using Soul Deflection.

Other than that I retreated my VW when he was Casting Soul Deflection, and used Health Funnel almost 24/7.

The two deathknights found on the lower floors aren't too terribly difficult, although they smack quite hard.

Prince Valanar, who can be found through the teleporter above the one you enter through on the upper level of the new room, is a little more tricky, as he casts Soul Reflection, which reflects all damage you deal while active back to yourself, and he occasionally casts a hard hitting shadowbolt. As long as you have enough sustain and don't attack when Soul Reflection is active it should be possible for most classes to solo this quest.
