A great trick for the Ritual of Summoning is for the Warlock to select himself and two party members "summon" him. This brings up the Summon Accept screen and it gives you 2 minutes before it wears off. The Warlock may then hearth and repair, buy food/water for the group, or whatever else they want in two minutes. They then simply accept the summon from themselves. Voila! No time walking back.

Creative game mechanic use!

(Note: This isn't as useful for 5 man instances now with meeting stones summoning. It is still useful for questing, random grouping, and raid areas. Also, I have never tested it with battle grounds, but I assume it would *not* work since the they are an instanced area and you can't summon into instances.)

This is one of the gems you get for being a Warlock. It is so much fun! Work together with a mage friend to trick people into teleporting themselves away. Drop people off cliffs by summoning them over the edge. Summon friends to weird places you got into, summon low level characters to high level places!

My favorite use of this spell is flying to the very top of Aldor Rise; there are hovering stone pieces that look like halves of an arch. Ask in trade if anybody wants free summons to Shattrath, then invite them when you already have a couple of friends with flying mounts with you, and summon them at the very top. The only way most classes can get down is by dying...what's funnier, most people thank me before jumping to their unavoidable death!

Yes it is true as of 2.4 you will be able to summon into instances as long as the target meets the level requirements of the instance.

Can't be used in Zul'aman as of patch 2.4.2, strangely. Can be annoying when someone accidentally runs back after dying to Jan'alai and forgets the scouts have a fast respawn timer.

Waiting near a Meeting stone is one of the best ways to get money as a Warlock. People will want you to summon other people for a variety of reasons (the "summonee" is too high or low level for the stone or something), and they'll usually tip pretty well.

At least they should. Unlike Mages, who only have to buy a little rune for a transport spell, Warlocks need 2 helpers and an item that they only get by putting their life at risk (that might be a little exaggerated, but you still have to kill something that can kill you just to get a Shard).

According to wowhead, this spell will be changed on patch 3.0.8

Will now create a summoning portal object which can be re-used for multiple summons for 5 minutes.

1 shard for 5 minutes of summons is definitely a huge improvement!

does it still plop the portal over your character in 3.0.8 with the summon casket thingy?

i think it looks a little bit ugly have a portal covering yourself and then a huge tauren poofing into your personal space

i know they changed it so locks cant summon people off cliffs and stuff but couldnt they have made the portal float above your head or something?

The Changes to Ritual of Summoning that were expected for 3.08 willl not be seen for a few days after the patch. Blizzard found an exploit jsut before releasing it and simply disabled the stone for now. So for now, the summon stone will jsut have a 2 minute cooldown and no new features.

The new ritual stone can be used by anyone, even if they are not in the group. Unsure if this goes as far as to work cross-faction, seeking more information.

3.0.8a was released today. The "new" patch corrected the ritual of summoning. Now it creates a green portal like Ritual of Souls. Once 2 other party members click it, a stone appears and the stone itself acts like a summoning stone found at most instances. The stone lasts 5 mins and the cool down is still 2 mins for the actual spell. Happy summoning

Id also like to add that blizz made the new "warlock summoning stone" totally sweet looking!

For some fun, put one of the new stones up at the open doorways in the base of Naxxramas. Then, a druid in flight form can start a summon while they're flying over open air, and someone on the ledge can click the portal to complete it. The result? Good old-fashioned summon of doom.

Blizzard may try to fix this, but it remains to be seen.

I used to do a lot of mean/funny stuff with this spell on my lock back pre-bc.

The classic one I can remember was summoning lowbies or guildies into the gurubashi arena and then killing them.

Summoning underwater was fun as well, I used to know a spot in a sunken ship where you could summon someone and he wouldnt be able to get out without drowning (this was well before the whole impossible to drown thing). We were of course sitting there with water breathing on having a good chuckle.

It is entirely possible to use another warlock's summoning stone.

I just used to to summon a few slackers in Dalaran. There were no error messages.

this spell doesnt rez people. Its like porting the player to your location. Very useful to gather party members in a hurry.

It "only" port players to your location.
Don't know if there is a cooldown on it though...anyone?

This is to summon people to your own location.

If your on the other side of the world, u can take 2 friends and summon a friend thats about 20mins away.

There is no cooldown, and it does not have ANYTHING to do with rez.

It uses a Soul Shard and thats it. But the deal is u need 2 friends to help u summon them!

Has anyone tried to use this in WSG? Have some one run up and grab the flag and POOF! back to their base? Will you drop the flag? Does it just not work in there? It would be pretty sweet if it could work.

So, have warlocks found that they're asked to summon less now that you can use meeting stones to summon the rest of the party (with fewer people than this requires as well).

Now that meeting stones can be used to summon, it has taken away from the uniqueness of this spell.

So imo, they really need to add a new rank that does away with the 2 helpers requirement.

This spell is very usefull, so usefull poeple are such Fat ass's they wait for the summon wile the warlocks spend 50 silver on FP's going all the way over to the destination.Just resion #94837236280347348734834739437483 its tuff being a warlock.Poeple that randomly ask you for a summon though,ask em for money! its good...

This is still a great spell, Meeting stones may require less players(2) and no soul shards, but you CANNOT move them, Warlocks can summon players to any location. Plus if one of your party members is below or over the meeting stone's level requirement then the stone is useless for summoning them.

If a Rank 2 does ever come out(probably in the form of a tomb dropped in a raid instance) I'm willing to bet it will only reduce the players needed by 1. That is if a Rank 2 is ever made.

i'd like to point out what some ppl have already said: it can port people from and to anywhere EXCEPT from someone outside an instance to inside an instance and im not sure about vice versa... but pretty much u can summon someone from the farthest corner of netherstorm to like night elf nooblet territory so pretty useful if ur getting a run...

I have one question about this ability, and I thought I'd ask before spending 3 days finding out the hard way ...

Does the TARGET of the summon spell have a Level Requirement. (Can I summon a lvl 1 from newbville to a capital for example)

Just looking for the best way to organize my guild newbs, still kinda new myself.

I'm a level 70 demonolgy warlock but i still use this spell when people make me made i get 2 friends give them both unending breath and we go really really deep then summon when the party member you summon under water comes they all ready start to take breath damage - try it!

i should be able to learn this from my trainer, but i cannot. i'm the right level, it just isn't offered. is this a race specific train? like, do i have to go back to silvermoon to learn it? because i'm a be and trying to find it from org trainers, with no luck

If you really want to damage people with this spell you can make sure that they will start falling from a high place as soon as they appear from the summoning, thus fall damage being another way of causing a sick joke. But this was supposed to be an utility spell, you can summon people from your party without constrains as long as you already have two people to complete the ritual, and you can use this even to summon a level 1 character in Outland, or summon someone from the beginning of an instance to your location in order to help out.

im a paladin but got a warlock alt. it is SOOOOO fun to summon my nub friends to outlands and watch em run around trying to fear, sheep, blink, anything to run away from lvl 70 monsters who attack em even from like 1 mile away. =P eventually i save em just to say "its safe over there by the twisting nether" i fly over on my flying mount and summon with my friends. he was trying to get to us when i summoned so when he "POOFED" over to us he kept going forward right off the edge. =P

And yet no one has mentioned a fairly good use of this spell? Get 2 rogues and a lock into stormwind (the lock would be a challenge, potions possibly?) into an empty room/underwater (scouted by the rogues). Or at least the lock (who can logout there for future use). Then use the rogues to help summon up a pretty powerful raid group, right under the ally noses. Summon another couple of warlocks (with more shards) first and you get a full raid group, IN stormwind very quickly :D Perfect for a proper assasination attempt (especially if you send a pile of rogues out hunting guards down...).
Now the question would be, can you MC a warlock and use Summon? If so, A) who would have to click the portal (his faction or yours) and B) who could he summon (his or yours)?
Bubbled priest invades SW, waits for a lock/guildiealt to go past and MCs them to summon everyone :D

Its simple, The warlock selects the person they want to summon in the group, they cast the spell and 2 other nearby group members click on the portal that comes up and the selected player is summoned within seconds.

I know this is probably a really stupid question, but having recently participated in my first raid, and was asked by the raid leader to summon an absent party member, I couldn't figure out how to do it. With a normal party, I simply right click on the portrait and that targets the member to be summoned, but without a portrait to click on, how does it work? Please save this noob lock from any more embarrassment by replying somebody please. Thanks in advance.

Tried using this after a member died in Deadmines since we were at the end of the zone.

They popped into zone and I summoned w/2 party members, the person clicked the "Accept" button, but no summon! This was on 3 attempts.

Tried having them die then rez at graveyard, and then summon from there, but got message "Target must be in this instance."

Strange....

This is a great speel that untill resntly I never knew how to use. At level 20 a warlock gets this spell and although it is fairly costly it is well worth it. Also take note that this spell has no recast time and only takes 5 seconds to cast.

This spell MUST be done in groups of 4 or more. The warlock must left click on the portrait of the part member that is to be summoned. When the warlock casts this spell after the first few seconds that it takes to cast a purple portal will appear over the warlocks head. The warlock and two party members must right click on this portal that is above the warlocks head when he is "channeling" and not move. Then party member that is being summoned will be brougt to where the warlock is. It can only be done if the spirit is still in a body or if the party is in an isntance the party memebr must be ressurected but inside the instance.Also this spell can be used outside of an instance but it cannot be used at anytime if the party member is dead and has selected release spirit.

Can confirm that this spell can summon a player OUT of an instance, but to summon a player TO an instance you need to be standing outside of it.
