Varian seems to have more HP so he's probably more of a tank.

Thrall is an elemental shaman, more about damage.

I think Blizzard has nerfed Thrall fairly substantially from his own lore. As a warrior (although capable of Shaman powers, he chose not to use them) he bested Orgrim Doomhammer, a feat even Anduin Lothar could not achieve. He should be far superior to King Wrynn in combat based on that fact alone. Yet Blizzard gives him less hp (probably for balancing coniderations) and tends to favor only his shamanic powers. In the Battle for Undercity, he comes about as close to resembling that which was epitomized in Lord of the Clans, mocking his opponents who block his way knowing full well he can blast through the paltry defenses Varimathras erects.
