This should have been a mace. All healing classes can use the maces, but Pallies are locked out of daggers. The equivalent sword available is far more oriented towards DPS than healing, but for the few classes that can't use the sword and would use this as a DPS weapon instead (ie, moonkin, shadow priests, ele shamans) they could still use this item as a mace for DPS too.

As it is for a Pally looking for a healing weapon out of these items we get stuck using the sword with +hit on it (until that can be replaced - while it's a DPS oriented weapon it's still the best healing weapon a pally could get solo).

Why "should this be a mace"? It's clearly not, so deal with it. There are other classes that are locked out of maces too, and who the heck gives a damn about bubblegirls.

This weapon is also a great caster weapon for every caster class and priests/Druids I assume. For warlocks, you get spirit, Which is great, plus haste, Which is even better for the affliction locks out there.

An awesome upgrade for the Netherbreath Spellblade and Flameheart Spell Scalpel, assuming you don't need the extra hit.

I'm a resto/balance druid wielding the https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=37169 which is a very nice weapon pre-raid, but I'm getting this A.T. dagger as soon as I get my first 25x https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=44990.

I use a item comparaison mod and here's the stat differences between both weapons:

Scalpel of the Royal Apothecary

Spell Crit Chance: 0.23%
Spell Haste: 0.91%

By going with the Scalpel dagger you get:
+285.6 health
-168.3 mana
-9.4 mana regen
-82.6 feral a.p.
+1.19% haste
+0 spell dmg
+0 healing
+0.07% spell crit
+0.91% spell haste

Not all that impressive, but you get the +38 Spirit with it as well, which is the main reason I'm going with it.

As a casual player that probably will never see the inside of a raid for some time, I was amazed at how easy and quick it was to get this healing dagger for my resto druid set. 9 days to get it? I've spent longer than that trying to get a loot drop when I used to raid often. Add on another 5 days for the tanking staff and that's a total of just 14 sets of dailies for 2 of the best items I'm ever going to see!

Although it's rather hard to see in-game, this dagger constantly emits small puffs of black smoke from where the blade meets the hilt of the weapon (it's easiest to see this effect at character selection, but it is visible in the dressing room or by zooming in when you have the weapon drawn). A cool little bonus for what is already an amazing weapon for casters trying to gear up for early raids.
