This achievement is new for 2009's Winter Veil festival, and involves what players speculate to be this year's special Winter Veil Gift. For this achievement, you will have to use your newly acquired BB gun (presumably) to pelt each of the opposing faction's leaders - how mean! First snowballs, now BBs? What ever happened to respecting authority? Not exactly sure how you're going to get out there safely to pull this one off just yet, maybe there will be some sort of training ground and you don't have to shoot the actual NPCs.

Wow guys, instead of crying about you using your snowballs and not getting credit for this, perhaps you should READ the achievement first? It doesn't say hit them with snowballs, it says PELT. This is probably not from using snowballs from vendors, but the Winter Veil '10 gift which won't be available until 12/25.

I was trying to pelt Lady Sylvanas on my Death Knight. Before I made the shot, I decided to make a Deathgate first so I could quickly escape before she made her revenge upon me. I successfully pelted her with the item and escaped through my portal... only to discover that all the guards at Acherus were hostile to me. Seems I couldn't escape death. :P

Please note that sometimes this MISSES, and also that cast gets interrupted when you get hit.
Making this for a pretty annoying achievement.

When you "miss" the faction leader will get a "startled - did someone shoot at me?" debuff, and it wont tick towards achievement.

It's already an aggravating achievement, but the cast-time and miss-chance are just ridiculous...

i just started the BB king achievement and started with the blood elf boss, it took me 4 shots to hit him and every attempt does aggro him, in other words if you solo it be prepared to corpse run alot because the BB gun misses more then it hits

Before you attempt this achievement, you might want to get a raid going for For the Alliance! (or at the very least a couple of friends to act as a distraction). I tried to solo Lady Sylvanas Windrunner on a subtlety rogue, but got my head beaten in. Just like any ranged weapon, the Red Rider Air Rifle requires you to be at range. So I stood at range in stealth, and fired. It has a cast time, and before I'd finished 'casting', Sylvanas stunned me and sic'd everything in the room on me... including stealth detectors - so Cloak of Shadows and Vanish didn't work very well for me, unfortunately. This achievement isn't necessary for the full Merrymaker achievement, but like the Crashin' & Thrashin' achievement from last year, you may not get the chance to do this next year (but maybe you will, I don't know).

Just Got my pellet gun and started out with the Blood Elf's boss. Took me two shots to get a hit on him. one hit killed by the boss. I went in with my Winter clothes with a Diamond-tipped Cane. it costs me 4c for the repair. but its worth it. :)
On my dk, the avg. miss is about 1 in 2 shot, so its 50-50 chance to hit the boss for me. not sure about you guys, but at silvermoon, you can take two shots if you are at max range.

Just got to UC. the Eleveter door is open for 5 sec give or take. from the door way from the tomb to the eleveter door is about 4-4.5sec walk with your 100% mount. so if you dont want to get hit by the guard in front of the eleveter, go when you count 1 mississippi. :) you will either get into a elevator without a hit form the guard or get hit once or twice.
but becareful of lvl 80 elite guards... they hurt alot without armor. D:
The hall to the boss is hard for me. they hit very hard and I can only manege to pass 2 halls or section (w/e) at the time... :( running back is not the fun part of doing this.
Got her! but got killed by lvl 12 orc. :( i can pwn him if I was geared.... /cry moving on to somewhere that I want to go.

Thunder Bluff. Take the lift and try to sneak to elder square or something like that. from there, you can sneak pass the guards and head directy towards the boss.
when you get where the boss is, there is a lvl 40 fishing trainer, sneak pass by him and get in front of him. you have a clear shot of him
By the way, on my toon, the casting time of hte pellet gun is 1sec and i do not get interrupted when I get hit. i think blizz hot fix something. idk.

as stated above. Orggmar is the hardest to get. i mean, Vol'tin shoots you for 6k, 12k at crit. he can basically one shot you....
the hall between the trainer and the throne room is a good rezing place for Vol'tin, since you can bandage there without getting aggro from the guard. from there, you will get aggro by two guard, but have one shot of shooting at vol, either miss or no miss, you will get kill by vol unless your geared.
To get Thrall, you are require to stand where the body is on the link below my comment. you can take two shots from that position. at that position, you wont aggro Vol'tin, but aggro 3 guards. but you will still have enough time to take at least one shot on thrall.

Not quite. I have the present on 2 level 80, and on 8 other low levels. The Winter Veil gift isn't a level 80 I think... I got last year's present on my DK before it hit 80.

Just putting it out there....This achievement sucks for clothies. I've been trying to go for Thrall for a while now and as a mage you're dead before you can even get a shot off. Doesn't seem likely that this is very soloable for many non-bubbling clothies. Possible. But with lots of strife.

Hunters can cast the BB spell through deterrence. I imagine that Paladins can also bubble through it.

I used 22 charges on my Red Rider Air Rifle to hit five bosses.

It uses a charge when you miss, when you get interrupted... hell, I even think it uses a charge if you're not in range or if the range changes while you're trying to fire.

Considering it's got charges, can't be used in any situation where you're not in range (and it has a dead zone, ala hunter guns) of an attackable target (i.e. Can't be used on your standard every-day in Ironforge with nothing but friends around you), I'd say this is my least favorite gift ever.

The fact that it's a gift at all somewhat surprises me. The fact that BB King is an achievement that awards points suggests that we may continue to get this gift every year from now on, as all previous gifts only award Feats of Strength. Either that, or expect this achievement to quickly become a Feat of Strength.

Previous gifts were used in friendly situations for friendly competition or fun. This has "KILL THE ENEMY!" written all over it, and it makes me sad.

Don't need to be in a raid. I've soloed all of them so far and am on my way to Cairne for the last shot. Lady was a bit of a pain in the but just getting to her throne room. The long, narrow corridor packed with guards got me dead a few times but once you are in there you should be able to find a spot where you can rez without picking up aggro and take your shot. Of course once you do that you will immediately gain the attention of everything in that room and will quickly die.

This may be obvious, but you should use a macro to make it easier to target and shoot (after each target, update the macro with the name of desired target):

It's a pain, particularly with Thrall and Vol'jin, thanks to multiple folks resurrecting & pulling mobs one way or another, to select or keep the appropriate NPC targeted. Wait for someone to rez, get away from them, rez, then spam the macro.

Definitely one of the most pain in the butt quests in the game!

You should try to do this quest with a group that is doing the For the Alliance quest as you can cap off a few rounds from the Red Rider Air Rifle that you get as a present from under the tree on Christmas Day (Dec 25th) during the Winter Veil event. But if you can't find any raid groups on your server; you can do this quest solo. It's gonna take a few tries, lots of time, even more deaths and triple the patience.

You may choose to do this quest during the night time hours for lesser player population in the horde cities.

1. Get naked, leave all your gear in your bank. If you rez at the Spirit Healer in a graveyard; all gear in your bags will take a hit and end up costing you lots of gold for repairs. You're not gonna need to fight, so leave the gear behind.

2. Put on your most festive gear (any level 1 gear will do). This has no bearing on your health unless you can enchant low level gear. I have a few sets of banking gear with stamina enchants so it does help. But for this holiday season of Winter Veil - I chose to wear my Red Winter Hat, Red Winter Clothes & Winter Boots.

3. Bring lots of Healing Potions or Stealth Increases. You're gonna need them!

4. Travel to each Horde city location. Knowing the layout of each city is your best bet or you're gonna be running around a lot and dying. Obviously if you can stealth into each location, do so. Study the maps if you don't know where you're going. Find each Horde target and fire the Red Rider Air Rifle whenever you are in range of them. The item does have a timer and you can be interrupted if you take any hits. But you have 200 charges(shots), so no worries. (Add the Red Rider Air Rifle to a bound key or on your Action Bar for quicker access)

Thrall = Use the West entrance into Ogrimmar for easiest access. Follow the path all the way left to get to Thrall. The Hold is heavily guarded with NPCs and maybe a few players. So this is going to take a few tries to get close enough. Just run in the middle of the Hold room, target Thrall and blast away.

Vol'jin = This NPC is in Ogrimmar in the same place as Thrall just on the right as you enter the room. (See Thrall's paragraph for instructions)

Cairne Bloodhoof = Use the West Elevators to get into Thunder Bluff. The first elevator is your best choice as it has a clear shot to a path on the right that goes all the way around the city and puts you close to Cairne Bloodhoof. Use this path and you don't have to pull so many guards. Your target is easy to see and shoot at but make it quick.

Lor'themar Theron = Silvermoon City is pretty easy to get in, just mount up and ride through all the way to the palace. There are lots of guards on the way and around but there is an area right before you get to Lor'themar Theron that only has one walking guard. You can rez in that area and creep close enough to Lor'themar Theron to get off shots before they all get to you and kill you.

Lady Sylvanas Windrunner = Getting into Undercity is by far the most difficult to get to with low level gear on. Use the sewers if you have to. In order to get to her location it's gonna take a few tries (deaths) and the run back from the Spirit Healer is long. Patience is your best friend here. You can get all the way to her but you may be too close to fire the Red Rider Air Rifle so stay at the stairs that leads up to her location. Careful of the guard that is standing right there.

BB King complete!

And that's all folks! I did all of them solo and it took me a grand total of 2 hours and 10 deaths. (Since I was writing this post while I was playing).

Another thing I noticed when doing this achievement is that the BB Gun has a small chance to, instead of firing, shoot you in the eye, stunning you for three seconds ("They told you this would happen!"). The debuff has the same icon as Cheap Shot--for a moment, I thought an enemy rogue had gotten me before I read the tooltip.

I didn't have a problem with any of this except for the guards have knockdowns, which can interrupt your shot. Just make sure you have them targetted before you res and spam the button. I was able to get off a shot at Cairne with 5 guards on me, so I got lucky there. I also think Vol'jin has a ranged interrupt, so you want to res out of aggro range of him.

I decided to skip this achievement. I finally got to Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, and I shot her 4 times. I missed every time, and she only got a "Startled" debuff. I never once got credit for shooting here.

I've made the achievement today and it seems to only count for it if you actually deal damage to them. special effects as "right in the eye" or "startled" don't count as a hit.

The rifle does not have unlimited range. When trying to shoot Lor'themar it didn't become usable until i was on the top step leading down to his circle in the Sunfury Spire.... maybe 35 yard range?

An important note when trying to rez and then shoot Thrall. Due to lag, cooldown, or whatever... the BB gun will give several "not ready " messages. Unfortunately, the guards will aggro and be on you before the gun is ready. If you can, arrange to stealth in then shoot, that works better. At least you get your shot off.

ok, ok,

started this achievement yesterday, but without spending much time on it.
I had decided to start by the "quick" one as Thrall and Vol'jin seemed to be in the same room.

well, quick ? NO No NO.
after a few tries (and deaths of course), I decided to get back to normal life and get on with my Xmas day.... and got back to it later in the day. Still no luck.

I was pelting Thrall, or Vol'jin and again and agian... No pelting credit..!.!.!

Today, I decided to give it another go.
Tried Cairne Bloodfhoof in Thunderbluff.
Got there naked (or almost), and after 6 trials, got the credit.

I would not have a problem with this achievement, if only I understood why I am not always getting the credit.

Would it be linked to the HIT rating? and basically you would not get the credit because you would actually miss ?

That is the only acceptable explanation I can think about.

Have a lot of patience if you decide to go for it.
I will edit this comment with my results on the other bosses in the next hours.

Thought I give some cheering to the other players, in their misery.

Edit: after all this, I got him first try this evening. Did exactly as before, died exactly as quickly, so random or just hiting rate ?

just a little sidenote...u have to be a certain distance away (doesnt say exactly how far) from ur target to be able to use the gun...on thrall or vol'jin..if you don't make the shot the first time..chances are him and the million other elits in the room are going to swarm you before you're able to get another shot off..it took me a couple deaths..but i figured the best strategy is to get into thralls room before you die..then when u rez place urself in view of either thrall or vol'jin...target them...move back until the dot on the gun turns red..then move forward until it becomes white so u have enough distance between u and him..rez and shoot as fast as u can! as a paladin i bubbled once i rezzed..makes it a lot easier

Just soloed it with a Rogue. The same tactics will probably work with a druid in cat form.

You can pretty much stealth your way to any faction leader. You can also probably ride straight to the leaders' rooms, but that will cause you to die rather fast. I pretty much died in every capital, but it doesn't matter, maybe with Preparation this can be avoided in some places.

Vol'jin and Thrall were the ones that caused the most trouble. You get aggro very fast there, and the throne room gets pretty crowded. When you die, try to get in range of the 2 leaders, rather, have your corpse close to both. You can use a macro to help out, but I just targeted the leaders as a corpse and spammed my pea shooter as soon as I rezzed.

Good macros would probably be:

/target Vol'jin
/use Red Rider Air Rifle

and

#showtooltip
/target Thrall
/use Red Rider Air Rifle

I think you would need 2 macros here, just to be able to switch targets faster. Same basic macro should work for every boss, just change the name.

For the other capitals the following macro should work:

In Ogrimmar that method would probably not work, due to the close proximity of the 2 bosses. That's why you'd need the 2 macros there.

If you are a mage, use Mirror Image the moment you resurrect. All the guards will start to attack the images instead and you will have time to shoot the Air Rifle about 2-3 times (and pray one of them doesn't miss) before the images die and the guards turn on you.

If u are a shaman you can set a Stoneclaw Totem down as soon as u rez and that will give u a little extra time to get the shots off too. It worked for me :)

From an engineers point of view Cairne is incredibly easy, you merely have to stand as close as you can get, shoot, activate boots and run around the hut and off the cliff. Of course activating Parachute is an advantage once you're no longer standing on firm ground :)

Unfortunately this profession don't really provide help for the others, apart from a grenade stun for guards when you spawn, which can buy you the time needed to throw a shot or two.

soloable as N.Elf druid in Cat Form, balance spec. 80.

HINT: if you are having a really hard time try hitting barkskin, it will prevent the push back and save you a chunk of damage. sometimes not worth it (for example in org) as you get hit to much for it to make a difference and it takes the global cooldown so you cannot bb for a second. better in that case to just bb and hope.

~~~stealthed in to UC first through sewers after dropping all damagable gear in bank. made it all the way to sylvanas without dying, just make sure to go dead center between royal guards on the way to throne room (hint: when they "hear" you and turn to look but dont aggro, stop. they will turn back in a couple seconds then go forward and they wont see you). first time shooting sylvanas missed so ghosted back and res'd in throne room to try again and got her, died, and spirit res'd out.

~~~On to Silvermoon. Fly into Zul'aman and bolt your way to the gates. Pretty straight forward, ride up to the bottom of the steps leading to the throne room, then go into Cat form and stealth past the guards lined up outside without them even turning to look. Go into throne room and shoot Lor'themar Theron, die, spirit res out of the city.

~~~Next i tackled Orgrimmar. I went in the west entrance, stealthing past the guards. be careful as there is a scout with high stealth perception. just skirt WELL around her as she comes toward you and you will pass her no problem. if you come up to her from behind, do the same to pass her as you will be moving faster even while stealthed. after that its a cakewalk to the throne room. once you get there however it's a different story. just dash in past the guards as far as you can and die.

In the main throne room there are tiers with 1 elite guard on each tier, go to the tier behind the blood elves (they will not aggro you, east of thrall) target thrall res and hit him with the bb. Die and either retry thrall or head over to the corner of that tier and the tier closer to vol'jin. He seems to have very high agility it took me 7 shots to get him he kept dodging them. Be carefull that you stay in range of him as well as he will run out of range. you will probably only get one maybe two shots in before you die anyways.

~~~Lastly, Thunder Bluff. Take the north-east lift up (the lesser used lift) and stealth up to his level. ( i went via the elder tier, no guards worth mention and it deposits you right beside his tent) target him and slowly back up into the center till he is just in range. Shoot him and either dash over the side of the cliff (for a ghost res without res sickness) stay and let them kill you and then spirit res, or if you are an engineer go over the edge then use your parachute cloak.

Insanely easy to do as a prot paladin with decent gear. Keep your gear on cause you won't die/lose durability. For each boss just run up to them bubble when they come into view and walk up to range and hit them with the BB gun and run out. There's a nice spot near each leader you can run to to deaggro the boss/mobs.

For Undercity run into the little alcoves along the wall. The boss will deaggro but you'll have to kill a couple guards. Just use seal of light if you're low on health and you'll heal back up before they die. I like going in to the city through the sewers since that's the least amount of guards youll run through and the sewers exit close to the bosses room.

For Silvermoon city you can run out and to the left and hide behind a cart if you need to reset.

Ogrimarr was the most annoying achievement to do since there are so many guards and Thrall aggro's before you even get in range. I ran up to the entrance and when he aggroed just put up a bubble spammed the gun and then ran out and reset to do Vol'jin. You can run around the building to the left and hug the wall and all the guards will deaggro.

Thunderbluff you can deaggro the guards running along the south walkway behind the boss's room. I didn't have trouble with any guard in any city except for here since they kept stunning me.

Never died doing it this way and it was fairly easy. When I first tried soloing this achievement I kept missing or having range issues or getting stunned but once I started bubbling before shooting I never missed and hit the last three bosses without fail. Maybe it's a bug? The guards don't hit hard at all in full tank gear so I'd most definatly recomend running in in full gear. It's nice not having to corpse run :)

Just a tip, if you are in the middle of tons of guards like in Thrall's room, while you are still a ghost queue a battleground then wait for the menu to get in the battleground, ressurrect and get in the battleground this way you save a whole bunch of ressurrection problems... in the battleground just heart home. Thats it i hope it helps.

For Thrall and Vol'jin:

I was able to solo these two as a gnome mage (BB King). It took me a while, as the BB gun isn't very accurate and has a cast time that is very easily interrupted. Make sure you bind it to an easily accessible key—it'll make your life a lot easier. The best way to get a good range and least amount of aggro is if you stand on the platforms and shoot from there. The guards on the floor take a while to get to you. If my first BB cast didn't work, I'd blast wave, frost nova, then try again.

Vol'jin:
I stood on the ledge to the immediate left of the room's entrance. Here's a view of it.

Thrall:
I stood on the ledge to Thrall's right (entrance left). Here's a view of it. He didn't even get up when I rezzed, so I didn't have to worry about him coming too close and being out of range.

L 80 Pally tank - so I can bubble and hearth which helps a lot.

Cairne Bloodhoof fairly easy.
Take main elevator up. Go to the right avoiding guard on bridge (or kill him) stay to right along path. One Pat on hill up, can kill him. When just east of circle in front of his tent I took invis potion and ran into circle. Face tent door (north) come out of invis, target C.B. shoot. Bubble & Hearth.
Remeber to check 'cheeve to see you got him. I did have one miss.

Thrall & Vol'jin.
Ride into city from side entrance in The Barrens, stay left to get to Thrall building. You can loose aggro from guards if you run past and hang out behind tree and north side of building. Go to front of building and take Invis potion. Run through first room, coming out of invis. Target Thrall and shoot, he will be right in front of you.
Now you have to die. Just stand there and get beat up.
Vol'jin is in the same room but NOT beside Thrall as I have read on other posts. He was to the right of the door as you enter Thrall's room. Run back and position yourself on Vol'jin's side of the room, watch for two Pat guards so you can time it when they are farthest away. Target Vol'jin, accept Rez, shoot. Bubble & Hearth.

If you are lucky like I was a Hordie was talking to Vol'jin, so I caught him off guard. After shooting and bubbling take the time to say 'gottcha' to very confused Hordie :) all the guards went nut's when I rez'd.

Lor'themar Theron.
Was also pretty easy, run right into city up to throne room? castle? entrance. You can loose any aggro behind the cart on the north west side. As mentioned in post above. This was helpfull because I missed my first shot so went there to rest. At entrance ramp use potion of invis - run to entrance of room, don't go to far in or range is off. Shot him then bubbled and ran out to cart. No hearth because I wanted to ride to flightpoint to get to Undercity.

Lady Windrunner.
This one was harder because I don't know the Undercity well. Took sewers in and ran about the Appocary(?) a bit while lost. Found I could easily take 2 or 3 guards without much effort so just started walking around. Found entrance to Throne room, (from sewer stay on main path around right side of green stuff, don't go into the Appocary) it's on your right. Walked in fighting 4 guards at once, went around right side of throne, shot her. Bubble & hearth.

Fun 'cheeve & only used 10 charges / shots total. Not sure why some posters say lots of misses.

As a druid I was able to stealth 3 of the 4 locations easily:

Lady Sylvanas in Undercity
Lor'themar Theron in Silvermoon
Cairne Blood Hoof in Thunderbluff

I have as yet not managed to pelt Thrall or Vol'jin. There are too many guards that are placed so that without improved stealth (maybe with!) it is impossible to stealth into their room. Since the gun has a short cast-time it has so far been impossible to pelt one of the leaders right after rezzing!

I will try again with improved stealth, stealth potions and stealth boots - if these are necessary at all.

It is possible to solo thrall and vol'jin but you will die.
Go in accepting that fact.
Suicide run into the throne room... goes as deep as you can before dying.
Then rez on the 'shelf' along the wall.
Target Vol or Thrall before rezing... when you rez, only one guard (the one on the shelf, do not rez when the patrol on the shelf is walking by.
Then when you rez SHOOT one of them and prepare to die.
Do it again for the other....If you are lucky and rez just barely in pelleting range you can solo this during quiet times and 'only' die three times.

Decided to do this since I was traveling to the Horde cities anyway for Elders of the Horde. Followed Anamcha's advice of standing by the blood elves in Orgrimmar, that was helpful--on the first try I stood in the middle of the room, cast barkskin and then shot, got killed before I could get a shot off. If you're a druid I wouldn't bother with barkskin. The hit probability for the BB gun must have been buffed or else I'm extremely lucky, because I went 5 for 5 when I did get a shot off.
