"Turtles all the way down" is a tongue-in-cheek response to the Native American myth (along with a few other cultures... Hindu, and possibly Chinese, but I'm not quite certain on that one. The Greeks put Atlas in the turtle's place.) that the Earth rests on the back of a giant turtle. When the child asks, "But, if the Earth rests on the turtle's back, what does the turtle rest on?" the snotty response is, "It's turtles all the way down, kid!" The response intends to demonstrate that it may be absurd to believe that that the earth is supported by a large reptile rather than, say, gravity.

What's the Wise Old Elder's response? That, my dear WoWHeads, is a question for the ages ;)

Yes, the world on a turtle is an already existing tale as well as the conundrum of what the turtle is standing on. However, the exact phrase "turtles all the way down" first appeared in Hawking's book - so the reference is likely pulled from there.

I would think it is just like the Ice Mammoth achievement, or any mount achievement. Meaning one criteria is the item you get, and the other is the spell you learn to summon it.

so it is the item that you fish up that is missing from Wowhead, as you can see the other criteria being a spell or skill.

Hi all..

Ok, i got this today.. I was a bit confused as to where to fish.. I started fishing open water lakes / pool but NOT the sea in Northrend. What a waste of time.. i spent about 4 hours sunday with nothing.. However i looked a bit deeper for info in here and on wowwiki.. all i could find was this little nugget of info.
"Fishing pools, or Schools of Fish, are location objects found in different bodies of water in WoW that have a significance to the fishing profession." (from wiki)

So i started again...

I logged in today and headed off to Borean Tundra.. There is a nice lake there called "Lake Kum'uya"... It isnt that big of a lake but the Musselback school spawn very quick. I started at the 1st school and worked my way around the pool clockwise. When u get back to your statring position, new school will have spawned.. so ideal for this achievement.
My co-ords where 52.9 44.3

My fishing is maxed out so im not sure on the lv you need to be to fish the school..

I dont know what the drop rate is for this but ive been fishing for a week now, caught roughly 5k Glacial Salmon and still no mount.

Never the less, my advice would be go for Grizzly hills cause there are plenty schools there, plus on my server, salmon sells very well!

Finally got it today. Tried fishing every school on the coast from Grizzly to Borean twice (give you about 600+ fishes) and then i tried the Glacial Salmon Schools in Grizzly Hills and got it on the 4:th pool. I found mine in 39.5-34.5 in Blue Sky Logging Grounds.

I'm curious about autoloot on the mount? The fish in orgrimmar and ironforge aren't cathable with that on. Is it the same way with this mount?

Autloot does not affect drops, and if something is BoP and you auto-loot, it will still prompt you as to whether or not you wish to loot it. The issue is when someone is fishing rapid fire or not really paying close attention and they cast after the loot pane is displayed, but BEFORE clicking "Accept" on the "Bind to you?" business. Then the item is gone, and cannot be re-looted.

I've been fishing for this for 2 weeks now, and I have more fish than I know what to do with... over 300 fish feasts in my bank, 15 stacks of glacial salmon, 17 stacks of nettlefish, and 22 stacks of musselback sculpin..... I opened a ticket with a GM yesterday to see what the low down is on the Sea Turtle and here's our conversation.

The turtle can be fished in ANY water in northrend, not just the schools of fish that you see. Happy hunting, I'm at 7700 fish caught right now, and still counting.. hopefully I'll get it before I hit 10k fish!

Just got my turtle. It does not require max fishing skill as I was at a measly 338 when i caught it using a +25 fishing pole and +75 bauble. I had been fishing in sholazar basin just trying to get the daily fishing quest done when I noticed a fish pool nearby, not knowing if the daily needed the pool or not, and theorizing that I could at least use to fish to help level cooking, I started fishing it. After just 2-3 casts it auto looted into my bag, achievement flashing on the screen, very surprising to say the least.

so 1) you do not need max fishing skill, or even very high, just enough to avoid a lot of junk.
2) with autoloot on, the BOP item still goes into your bag automatically, no confirmation came up on my screen to loot it. but I would make sure theres space in your bag at all times if I were you.

My personal 5 cents for catching this mount and rare catches in general:

Get Bejeweled addon (or maybe even Peggle), and play it while you fish! Just set your Ambience and Music volume down, and Effects volume up and you'll hear when you catch something (if no one else is fishing near you). Makes fishing a lot more painless. :) Listening to music while fishing makes it also more comfortable.

Just remember, all you can do is keep fishing... You will catch it eventually. ;)

JUST caught this guy myself. After about seven hours of fishing, off and on. I usually played poker in the background while listen for the sound. Made fishing go by very quickly.

This morning I wanted to catch 100 Glacial Salmon, Musselback Sculpin, and Nettlefish for the Fish Feast. I first went to Grizzly Hills to catch the Glacial Salmon because I like fishing the river there. After I picked up 100 salmon I headed to Borean Tundra to catch the Musselback Sculpin. At 53 in, I caught the mount!

I had 450 fishing of course. A long with the Kalu'ak fishing pole, +3 fishing line, Weather-Beaten fishing hat, and just the +75 lure that the hat gives you.

The only advice I can give is to NOT give up. If I can get it, anyone can.

Finally got this today...about 5 minutes ago. My wife and I were both going after it, she has been fishing for about 3 hours straight. I get on and fish about 100 casts and BOOM, it's mine. Needless to say, I'm in the doghouse now, but happy hunting.

There aren't any pools in Dalaran as far as I am aware of....the achiement says from any fishing pool in Northrend. So I am guessing you can not fish this in Dalaran. Although it would be nice to kill two birds with one stone. :\

This is not the case. I just fished mine from a Moonglow Scuttlefish school, in the Frozen Sea out from Borean Tundra.

I just got my achievement while farming mats for Fish Feasts. I got mine while fishing nettlefish pools in Sholozar basin at around 10:40 AM on the Fizzcrank server. Good luck to everyone still trying to get this one!

I just fished mine up.
About a week ago i made it my mission to get this.
I installed fishing buddy to keep track of my total casts.

It took me 3355 casts to get it.
I spent about 3 hours per day over the course of 5 days.

Only fish in pools.
Be patient.
Watch films.
Never give up.

And it will be yours. But it is one, long, boring grind.

Sidenote - I did this alongside One that didnt get away achieve, which took me 1700 casts roughly to get, and after 3355 casts i had both achieves :)

I gave up on trying to get this but I continue to do the fishing dailies.

I fished the turtle up while doing the Monsterbelly Appetite daily. It dropped on first cast in a school of Deep Sea Monsterbelly.

I finally picked up the Sea Turtle mount after months of trying, at level 51.

When 3.1 came out, I immediately cleaned out my inventory and took the blimp to Northrend for an extended fishing trip. I stuck to the three Howling Fjord pools near the docks, two of which regenerate fairly quickly. I was killed numerous times by Orcas, twice by "friendly" crabs I had accidentally right-clicked, and several times by various humanoids during an ill-fated venture from Howling Fjord to the Tuskar villages.

To be fair, I didn't fish continuously for the sea turtle, as the cycle of casting and clicking got super-boring after a while. After burning out on Northrend fishing, I visited Dalaran for the Coin Master achievement, and continued competing in the weekly Master Angler of Stranglethorn until I picked up the hook, the pole and all three rare fish prizes. I recently went back to Northrend to try for the mount again and finally got him this time in a Howling Fjord pool.

I never want to fish again. :P

I got really lucky. I had just finished doing the fishing daily for monsterbelly and I had read a comment somewhere that in the frozen sea is where you could get the achievement. About 3 casts after i got the monsterbelly I got the achievement and nearly jumped out of my seat in shock! I was lvl 320 or so with a 100 level booster. I was off the coast of Borean Tundra in the frozen sea on a glacier.

Forget all the chatter about the frozen sea and inland water. By "pools" it means the things that show up on your minimap when you have Find Fish activated. You can fish it from any "pool" found in any body of water in Northrend.

Since this is a folklore story told the world around, I will link it to the page which I can remember seeing it. This excerpt is from David Dodd's Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics, as found on the "Terrapin Station" page:

I've been looking for the earliest version of this "turtles all the way down" story. What source does Hendrickson give? The earliest thing I've found so far is in Bernard Nietschmann, "When the Turtle Collapses, the World Ends," Natural History, 83(6):34 (June-July 1974).

I have been told that the story appeared in the preface to a dissertation written at MIT in about 1969, by J. R. (Haj) Ross, Constraints on Variables in Syntax (published by Ablex in about 1979), but I haven't been able to verify it.

Stephen Hawking tells more or less the same story at the beginning of A Brief History Of Time. In Hawking's version however, it was

A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. ...
William James did write at least once about turtles and elephants. In "Humanism and Truth", Mind 13 (N.S.): 457 (Oct. 1904), at 472; reprinted as chapter III of The Meaning of Truth, he wrote:

But is this not the globe, the elephant and the tortoise over again? Must not something end by supporting itself? ...
This in turn seems to be an echo of comments by John Locke in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690), Book II, Chapter XIII, Section 19:
... Had the poor Indian philosopher (who imagined that the earth also wanted something to bear it up) but thought of this word substance, he needed not to have been at the trouble to find an elephant to support it, and a tortoise to support his elephant: the word substance would have done it effectually. There's no snappy retort about "turtles all the way down" in these passages however.

It seems to me that a story about William James or Bertrand Russell cannot first have been told in 1969.

Actually, the page goes on for a few paragraphs discussing turtles in folklore and a few different examples of them. The song is pretty good too :)

Just want to add my little bit.

Got this not five minutes ago while fishing in Borean Tundra.

I finally managed to max out my cooking skill and was gathering fishies for Fish Feast. I decided, as I was in Stormwind that I would start with Musselfin as they were closest. I packed my rod and some lures and caught the boat to Valiance Keep and flew up to Lake Kum'uya ready for a long and boring fishing trip. I circled the lake 3 times fishing each pool till it dissappeared before venturing on to the next one.

My computer is old and kinda rubbish so each time I fish up something that is not a fish, it sticks for a few seconds before it lets me carry on. Many times did it stick and I waited patiently to see what junk I had fished up this time. A few crates containing Cobalt Ore, Borean Leather Scraps and Frostweave Cloth were the extent of my treasures, I also received many Weeds, Tangled Fishing Lines and fish in serious need of medical attention. My guild are hungry for Guru's Elixirs too so the random Pygmy Suckerfish was not an unwelcome addition. Casting the line again I had decided it was about time to call it a night when "SPLOOSH" my bobber dipped into the water. I clicked the bobber quickly so as not to let my Musselfin escape. My computer froze briefly and just as the loot box disappeared I spied a flash of blue text and "FWOOSH" <<TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN!>>

My fishing skill when I was finished was 393
Rod skill of +5
Lure skill of +75
Total skill of 473

Only fished up in the actual fishing "node" pools, not lakes or rivers or open sea.
Can be found in any of the fishing pools in Northrend that includes the Frozen Sea ones and the Pools of Blood created for the fishing daily Blood is Thicker.

Also the space bar action makes this little cutie jump and then hide inside his shell. Can't wait till the next Children's Week so I can obtain his little brother/sister as a companion for him.

A great time to get this achevement is on days where your fishing daily is Monsterbelly Appetite. Moonglow Cuttlefish fish nodes respawn like crazy so you're not wasting your lures between fishing points.

A few days ago I decided to farm for this mount, deciding that the fact that it's the only current sea mount in the game as my main motivation. It would also bring me closer to the Mountain O' Mounts achievement. And since I sometimes boost low level friends on slow mounts, it's kinda fun to have a rare mount for me to ride and for them to easily keep up with ;)

I started my farming process in Howling Fjord in that big lake south-west of Camp Winterhoof. There are lots of Fangtooth Herring fishing schools there, and they respawn fairly quickly.

My gear included a Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole enchanted with a High Test Eternium Fishing Line, and a Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat. I also applied a Glow Worm on my fishing pole every hour.

For the first 3 hours it was kinda fun. I kept flying around the lake in a counter-clockwise pattern and found the experience rather relaxing. But after 3 hours it started to get annoying... I tried to change my pattern to clockwise, kept switching little pets and mounts out to try and amuse myself, took breaks to cook all the fish that I caught, etc. I was thinking to myself "is this really worth it? why is this taking so long? I hate fishing! I am never fishing again after this!" But I was persistent and kept going.

As I was nearing the 6 hour mark of my journey I stopped for a break and looked at my achievements, especially those under Fishing. On a whim, I decided to 'Track' this achievement. Now, I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but right after I did that the first time I tried to fish (yes, the very first!) I actually caught it! I couldn't believe it. I don't know if tracking the achievement made it happen for me, or if it was just luck, but that's when I got it! True story.

If anybody else is doing this, try it and see if it works for you, too. I sure hope so! And I hope this information is helpful to anybody else trying to do this tedious task :P

finally, today has a been a good day for me and fishing.

i got the rat from dalaran and now i got the turtle.

ok here are my stats...

btw...got it in less than 30 minutes.

kalu'ak fishing pole, sharpened fish hook (100 fishing for 10 min.), 450 fishing ability.

i fished it up in the lake in borean tundra and as a special bonus i got a lot of musselbak sculpin.

i tried to get it for 2 days in a row in fjord and in grizzly hills, so after a lot of reading i guess this lake in tundra is the best spot.

Well after I read all comments on how to get this mount from all of you, I said to hell with randomly fishing in open water to skill up and I went fishing for the mount. I'm glad that i did cause after about 50-65 min I cought my mount in grizzly hills with a fishing skill of 198. I TY all that post your comments on where you cought your mount, it help me alot =)

For those still trying I started in Valiance Keep and fish along the coast, then when I ran into a streem i followed it and fish in it too, if it came to a dead end, I would follow it back down and continue fishing along the coast.

Now from the coast theres a river that ties into dragonblight, grizzly hills, and zul'drak. I took that lake and turn right on to another streem and fished in a school of glacial salmon that was located above the first " i " in the name grizzly hills displayed on your map.

I hope this helps some one els get the mount faster than others =)

Sounds like you don't understand the meaning of POOLS. Please read what others have posted!

The 6500 non-fish "things" you caught means you were not fishing in POOLS! Pools produce about 98% fish and 2% loot boxes and other NON-JUNK items. If it is grey, you missed the pool!

I can personally confirm it does still exist, and it is still an achieveable item... as I just got it! Saw the blue loot in the window and before i realised what it was up pops the achievement!

Not that it really matters but I was fishing from Musselback Sculpin schools at the lake south-east from Amber Ledge. Take your time, patience is a virtue. One day she will be yours.

Intresting thing, really don't know if it just luck. During Kalu'ak Fishing Derby I try to catch my shark from the lake near Utgrade Keep. I don't see any shark but catch Dark Herring and get achvement https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/achievement=878. Then my freand say "try to catch turtle, someone told that after Herring you can catch turtle in 30 minutes". Why not says I and continue fishing. And 10 minutes later I get my turtle xD.

I spent 5 evenings fishing the schools of fish in the Frozen Sea in Borean Tundra in search of this extremely rare Sea Turtle mount. I did a lot of research looking into several things. First i read a post which said fishing off the banks will not get you the turtle, and that you must fish in the "Schools" of fish. I had earned my fishing pole from the Kulak and received the fishing hat from doing fishing dailies in Northrend. Yes i used lures too just the bright baubles, though.Earned fish Don't Leave Footprints to be able to spot the "Schools" faster.

I confirm I caught I Sea Turtle fishing off the "Ice Caps" in Frozen sea. My cords were 30.66.

A few things you need to know:

1. you are going to be fly fishing a lot to get your bobber to land in the "School" of fish.
2. Make sure you keep some open space in your bags. Once your bag is full of fish stop fishing and fly to a mailbox mail the fish to your alts or sell them in the auction house or to a vendor. If you catch a turtle and ur bags are full you will not be able to loot the item unless u destroy fish, avoid that mistake. It could be along time till you catch another one!
3. If you want to take a break and relax fishing is good. I enjoyed fishing for turtle to relax before raid times in Icecrown Citadel.

A few posts said 1% drop rate, and 20,000 fish and 5,000 casts before they got it but this is all a matter of luck. you will be fishing for a very long time for this so be ready.

Just flew to Sholazar to do the fishing daily on a crappy alt there. Semi-AFK, I casted with my amazing 259 fishing skill. My cast accidentally landed in a pool, getting me both the first part of https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/achievement=153 and https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/achievement=3218. This is the same character that got https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/spell=54753 while doing that quest for the first time during leveling. The irony is I've been trying to get the bear on my main for the better part of a year and have tried farming the turtle for a long time. /sigh

I agree. Lake Kuma ya or whatever in Borean tundra is indeed the best place to fish this turtle. I got him within an hour there. I'm not saying it has an inscreased drop rate there but it is definately a simple place to fish.

I named him yurtle.

Got this while doing the "One That Didn't Get Away" achievement as well by fishing the Fangtooth Herring Schools in Howling Fjord. Took 22 minutes to get the turtle. Lucky me as I just previously got the Giant Sewer Rat in under 30 casts!

Took me about 120-130 casts, I also did it in Borean Tundra @Lake Kum'uya like many of the other posters did.

Not very hard though.

You all are probably going to hate me but i got this within 40 minutes of fishing in the Borean Tundra. I am a lvl 64, with a fishing skill of 425 (325+100 from a lure). I was fishing from a manta school along derelict strand, and this baby popped up- i almost had a heart attack!

So no you don't have to have maxed-out fishing skill and spend weeks grinding for this guy, you just have to be a lucky sonofa@#$%^ like me!

I found the best place to fish for this are the Glassfin Pools right under Dalaran. The pools spawn fast and are all clamped up.
There can be multiple fishers without being overfarmed.

I have been fishing here for 8 days, each day about 30min before raiding etc.
Just yesterday i had given up on catching the damn turtle, flying over to Grizzly Hills to farm some food. Ding, first cast the turtle :)

So just keep fishing every now and then, you will get it when you expect it the least.

if you're ratio isn't like that, you're the one not fishing in northrend pools.
Over 6k fish caught and 10k other things. No turtle yet.
Oh well, at least I'm making a profit out of all the fish feast mats.

You're never garunteed anything. You could fish 1,000,000,000,000 times and never recieve it. I would add that you would most certainly be the most unluckiest person in the world (of warcraft), and quite possibly the only one. But It is possible to never recieve the item, none the less.

The only way to garuntee a drop, is too fish infinite times, which is impossible since you can never finish fishing infinite times.

A much pointless reply, but needed for that one person who might have fished 1,000,000,000,000 times and read this.

So instead of

"You will catch it eventually. ;)"

It should be read, "You can catch it eventually. ;("

The best place to fish for this is in the frozen sea just south of Death's Stand at coordinates 29.82 67.00.
There are fast spawning schools of Moonglow Cuttlefish. Flying over, I counted 11 schools up at once in the same area.
