This ability could be a bit convoluted given the limited range. Melee and ranged attackers can often be well over 20 yards away from each other, and during the vast majority of a fight, the pet will only be buffing melee. You could macro this to pop at the beginning of a fight, but typically you don't try to buff yourself up with limited cooldown abilities so early (threat).

As it stands now, it is only a 5% * 20 / 210 = .47% increase in AP per person on a talented cooldown. Doesn't seem that great to me.

*Edit* This has been buffed to a 10% increase in attack power, effectively doubling the amount of AP gained to about .94% increase in AP. It may be worth using now. The range has also been increased to 40 yds, so no more range problems either.

I'm surprised Wowhead hasn't grouped these by pets.

Anyway, there are three basic groupings of end talents.

There are the Tenacious pets, which have Last Stand, Taunt and Roar of Fortitude. These include;
Bears
Boars
Crab
Crocs
Gorillas
Scorpids
Turtles
Warp Stalkers.

There are Cunning pets, which have Roar of Recovery, Wolverine Bite and Bull-Headed. These include;
Bats
Birds
Dragonhawks
Nether Rays
Ravagers
Serpents
Spiders
Sporebats
Wind Serpents.

There are Ferocious pets, which have Rabid, Lick Your Wounds and Call of the Wild. These include;
Carrion Birds
Cats
Hyenas
Moths
Raptors
Tallstriders
Wolves.

Not that these are the -only- unique talents for those pets, there are also things like boar charge and dive. But these are the break-down groups for the end-point-talents.

Well, this ability has gone from "crap" to "still needs improvement."
atm, trying to maximize ferocious pets' dps:
-cobra reflexes
-spiked collar
-spider's bite
-rabid

You cannot pick up this talent and rabid unless you have the end talent. Currently, rabid >> this one.

This ability is not only uber, but arguably overpowered. I may be mistaken, but as far as I've seen, this stacks with the flat 10% increases in AP that are being prevented from stacking in 3.0 (True Shot Aura and the like). This means that it could make the difference in regards to how many hunters are invited to a 25man. Check out the following raid comp:

With this raid composition, everyone in the two physical dps groups will have a 10% ap increase along with all other raid buffs during both bloodlusts. Needless to say, that adds MUCH more dps than a single Rabid could if the raid comp is tailored around it.

If it stacks, which I think it does, it's still a 10% AP increase for 20 sec every 5 min. You're not comparing Call of the Wild against "a single Rabid". Over that 5 min, you're comparing Call of the Wild against 6 Rabids.

Even if you overlap Call time with Heroism / Bloodlust, that's not enough reason to stack the raid with hunters. In any case, in the above example, you could replace the 2nd and 3rd Marks hunters with BM ones, and have both Call and Rabid, and add 6% damage to the group in the process.

between DK's horns and shammy's buff, both of which will be effectively up 100% of every fight - this is very lackluster given the long cooldown. A 2 or 3 minute cooldown would have made more sense - make it a once-per-typical-fight cooldown - and usable multiple times on bosses. The other question I have is that the tooltip reads 'party' - but with the party->raid changes lately has anyone checked to see if this works raid-wide (albeit within a limited range)...

Checked it just now... it does stack with TSA, cant confirm the others yet, but im guessing it does. So BM hunters its worth it for raiding :)

As of 3.03 this ability stacks with all improvements such as TS aura and totems of the like. HOWEVER! it does not stack with other call of the wilds. You will just get the flat 10% increase from one.

As a MM hunter, I wanted to use this instead of Rabid in order to buff the raid (or after 3.0.8, myself) for boss fights. Rabid doesn't seem to be all that great for an already weaker pet compared to my BM kin.

I tried making a macro to use this at the same time as Rapid Fire so I could control it's use, but it seems to have issues casting it if my pet's Claw/Bite/Smack is focus dumping. I have to turn off it's auto cast in order to cast Call of the Wild with Rapid Fire. Kind of lame, if any one finds a solution without turning off auto cast on Claw, please share.

I guess one could put it on the pet bar, and turn the auto-cast for Call of the Wild on for bosses (forcing it to cast as soon as the pet heads in), then turn it off for trash again.

edit: After reading and testing.. I think I have it narrowed down to a GCD issue. If you spam it, it works. In the patch notes for 3.0.8, I think this patch will fix it (though I could be wrong):

All Hunter pet abilities with a cooldown of 30 seconds or more are no longer on the global cooldown.

edit 2: I was right. The above change cleared the issue. However, rapid fire is on the GCD and CotW is not, so you'll have to spam that button to make sure both go off at same time if you're trying to cram it in mid-shots.

The ranges provided for this ability seem to be a bug (and yet reflect the current reality in game on live and PTR according to reports). It makes no logical sense for a hunter specific buff provided by a pet to give a longer range for melee than ranged attack power, and I'm not even sure why it has a range check at all besides the basic requirement to be in range when the buff is applied. Until the bug is fixed, hunters will need to make sure their pet is within 20 yards when they cast this buff or they will not get the ranged attack power buff.

As of now, it seems there are several broken pet abilities/talents.

Rabid: "Rabid will only cast if the pet is itself being attacked" - Maaven Blizzard CM
Heart of the Phoenix: Auto cast is glitched.
Wild Hunt: Effects may or may not calculate upon, logging, resummoning pet, or changing aspects.
Call of the Wild: Requires the hunter be within 20 yards to recieve the buff.

I would say 3% pet damage is worse than having another cd to pop for an extra 10% ap buff. popping this for burning a portal on togc lord jaxx is very helpful.
also your pet dmg isnt all that much of your overall dmg so 3% of 30(guess)% of your overall dmg is only 1% where the extra dps cooldown could be very useful in burst situations.

The way I set my macro up for these spells is that I use Call of the Wild together with Rapid Fire, and no, the GCD doesn't hinder this from working. Yes, Rapid Fire is on the GCD, but only when using another spell before, so essentially, if you use Rapid Fire before Call of the Wild in your macro, one press is enough. So basically, if you press for example Arcane Shot and then try to use Rapid Fire you will be unable to do so, but if you press Rapid Fire before Arcane Shot there will not be any problems.

Below is the very simple macro I am using for this spell and Rapid Fire. I'd also like to advice everyone not to have this on automatic casting

/cast Rapid Fire
/cast First Mate's Pocketwatch
/cast Call of the Wild

As you can see I have my trinket there as well, so this macro does all these three things in one go. If you wish to see the tooltip for any of these trinkets or spells, you can add this line in the top.
#showtooltip Rapid Fire

On a side-note, this is the macro (below) that I am using Bestial Wrath, Kill Command and my trinket, which happens to be Fury of the Encroaching Storm.

You can actually stack this up to 4 times before pulling the boss. First make a macro like

/cast Furious Howl(Rank 6)

Then in your raid just follow these easy steps:

1) Put misdirection on the main tank (important you *will* pull)

2) Open up your Call Stabled Pet window.

3) Press your macro and switch to your next wolf, rotate wolves till you have 3 or 4 of CotW & FH (I like to keep my last wolf's avail for killshot range) Pop a potion for added effect

4) Start the deeps as normal (be sure MD is up!)

Problem on Classic Wotlk is the Call of the Wild is shared among the pets - which is a bug Blizz doesn't care about. Used to be used as pre-pet, no longer available, what a bummer. Don't expect to be fixed ever.
