This in conjunction with Howling Blast (or a Mage 2v2 partner's abilities) is a powerful AoE nuke. Remember that it prevents ANY action, not just movement. It's basically an offensive Ice Block that you can hit them through. ~~And afterward, they're still considered frozen~~. A powerful PvP ability to be sure.

Edit: Pretty sure that isn't the case. After watching the video of it in action, it seems to mean they're frozen while they're... well, frozen. It's a pretty redundant tooltip.

Seems like it would from the tooltip. Yet for balance issues I can see blizzard making it only DK diseases.

Don't forget to end with Howling Blast for extra threat/damage. AoE Frost Fever from this means double damage with the Blast. 10 seconds is long enough for a Frost and Unholy rune to recharge, even.

Im alittle unsure about this talent, as the final talent in the frost tree it seems alittle out of place or like blizz just wasn't sure what to put here.

As an AoE freeze it would be useful for holding multiple mobs in place, but that alone doesn't grab much threat and any damage ontop at all would brreak the target and loose threat immediatley.

So a boss suddenly spawns adds and bang (assumeing you have enough rp and that all these adds spawned close to the boss) you freeze them all in place then you'd need to cast another AoE to actually pull enough threat on them which could be made from the start, skipping the need for this talent to be casted.

In a 5 man group on trash this talent could be used to hold mobs still while you target one, but any group should be able to CC trash well enough for that not to be neccsesary.

Apart from the possiblity of AoE grinding or farming the only other use for this PvE that i can see as really viable is if another group gets pulled by mistake and you freeze them in time to mark and re-CC. this just seems like an unlikley purpose for a talent in this position as it still doesn't really generate any threat.

In PvP its viability seems much more real as a 10 yard freeze in arena or even a bg could be far more useful as a cc or burst damage setup but even this seems odd to be placed at the bottom of the "tanking" tree

Unless im missing something vastly more effective about this spell and its uses which i would welcome somebody to tell me cause if it can be used well i would like to be able to

i can tell that using this in a pvp way is going to be amazing it is mass croud control for these reasons
frozen can't be shapeshifted out of like a root
here are some examples of super pain
a death knight and a warlock enter the WSG flag room the DK grabs the flag then stands imoble so people will surround him.
He uses this then makes a break for it with a pvp trinket or the human ratial.(srry can't spell)
the warlock lingers in the room till just before the freeze breaks maybe 1 or 2 seconds
he uses howl of terror (can subsitute for a priest wiht psychic scream) for 10 more seconds of cround control.
u can also have hunters drop the frost aura slow trap thing at the doors for extra pain and maybe another dk at the door to freeze them again.

In AB you can solo defend the flag just freeze them untill the rest of your team gets there.

In AV use it any way u can but not many ways.

In EoTS just use it at the flag till a shaman gets there so they can thunderstrike them off of the cliff and bam u just got a nice easy run back to ur base.

oh and as a reply u can use it for raiding u stack as many diseases as u can on one enemy then use pestilence to spread it around then blood boil for extra threat then freeze them and get away from there for heals and to escape. then have your aoe team dps jsut before the freeze breaks.

This talent can be really destructive, in PvP or PvE. Combined with some other one.

-Example for PvE, you pull way to much mobs and your not at 100%!
Cast Hungering Cold, they are frozen for 10 sec + FF
Heal yourself with a bandage
Cast Deathchill (100% crit)
Cast Howling blast (AoE that do 2x damage if FF is up on the mobs)
That's some power to start a fight!

When this ability is used in a instance, does the threat table reset?
i.e. If on my DK tank, and I used this for a set of adds, and a mage accidentally breaks one of them, does the mage get agro? Or is the threat the same, and it attacks me?

Given the terrible amount of spastic misinformation you poured into your post "fallangel" I'm going to say that you should actually reconsider attacking others for their knowledge and ability. So I'll prove your points wrong here if possible.

#1: 60 runic power. A few points to consider. As frost your runic power max is most likely going to be 130 so it will be easier to hold on to runic power and since Chill of the grave 2/2 causes your Chains of ice, Howling blast, Icy touch and Obliterate to generate 5 additional runic power you'll be just fine on runic power. And of course you can't start an encounter with this very often but thats ok. The duration of Frost Fever will run out in a few seconds after it is put up and this will basically refresh it on all mobs around you. Which is a good thing since you can then cause better AoE threat with your Howling blast and better single target threat on the target that your group should be focusing on anyways, if they know how to run an instance that is. So, 60 runic power, easy. A great use of runic power.

#2: In a group/raid this had better work. If your group can't focus fire on a single target then you have more to worry about than how this spell works. Plus even if they do smack another mob or two hopefully this'll have most of the other mobs frozen and will still reduce the smackdown suffered from a group of mobs. So in a pug you may have trouble because you're going to pick people like fallangel up and thus have a terrible time with your group because they don't know how to play (though they think they are the bees knees). But in a real run of a dungeon or raid you should be fine. Your group should know how to focus fire and know when to and when not to AoE in different situations.

#3: It puts Frost Fever on all targets in 10 yards? YES! Thats amazing since frost fever only lasts like 12 seconds and when targets have frost fever on them you do all kinds of crazy extra damage and such. Look at talents like Tundra Stalker and Glacier Rot and tell me I'm wrong. And putting Frost Fever on every mob by tabbing isn't really viable since you need to use frost runes which have a 10 second refresh before they are available. SO yeah, if there are only two targets you're fine tabbing but otherwise it's going to be a lot harder to tab and infect in a timely way. Better idea! Hit one mob with Icy touch to give it Frost Fever, hit it with Plague Strike to give it Blood plague and then hit it with Pestilence to spread both diseases to all targets in 10 yards. Then you hit them with a Blood Boil followed by Deathchill and then Howling Blast. At this point you should have more than enough Runic Power to cast Hungering Cold to refresh your Frost Fever and stop the surrounding mobs from banging on you for a bit. This saves the healer some mana and stress and again assuming that your group isn't terrible they are focusing their attacks on your target which you never had to change during that sequence. So everything around you had been hit a few times and has threat generated on you and you're good to go.

#4: Bosses are probably going to be immune I agree. But I also think that you're not going to be using a lot of AoE and crowd control against a boss anyways so it doesn't matter. So yeah, use Icy Touch for Frost Fever on a boss. Unless the boss has adds of course, which of course this may be good for.

So, no matter how you think about it this talent is amazing. It's really useful. If you are soloing and need to lock down a group of mobs or if you are in an instance and need to tank a group of mobs either way it's awesome.

So Blizzard, thanks for such a good Frost talent. Leave it where it is and heck, if you're feeling froggy make it even better since you have some room to work with it. Make the area larger or make it automatically add fallangels characters to your ignore list when used.

Here's why you choose this talent for TANKING.

It is a control spell.

AOE freeze stops a lot of incoming dps.
It can also therefore be cast when you need a heal.

In PVE this can be great for a tank or a dps. We don't have a major CC so having this when a hunter multi-shots all of the sheeps can be a great save without having a multi taunt.

In PVP, AOE CC is amazing. It won't be your opener, but it will def catch your enemies off guard, especially after they PVP trinket out of an aoe fear.

Adittionally, if you plan on doing Arenas as Frost, you should absolutely try a 3s or 5s combination with 3 Death Knights, 1 being you. Make sure everybody can comunicate quickly with each other with some voice device. All DKs should open up diseasing as many enemies as possible, with pestilence (Glyph of Pestilence welcomed) if possible and then try to hit Hungering Cold in as many enemies as you can. This isn't tested, but assuming what the description says it won't break upon diseases' damage, even if its not yours. If the oposing team don't trinket out of it or don't get dispelled by a friend they can lose a good bunch of Health from all the 3 DKs DoTs. Just do the math. Finishing up with Howling Blast and Blood Boil (for both the other DKs too) is also a good idea. This would be ideal with 1 Frost DK and 2 unholy, or 2 Frost and 1 Unholy for an emergency Hungering Cold if needed but an extra finishing Howling Blast.

Well maybe when there's no CC at all. Pulling 5 mobs, get enough aggro on all, then Hungering Cold on them. Kill 1 by 1.

In PvP this rocks. 10 second of 'complete' immobility is crazy.

This seems like like a good ability to get but seems more of an 'oh sh^t' rotation where you need to get the attention of alot of mobs, you'd hit this then howling blast for an aoe taunt (on a bad/face pull?). Add an initial deathchill and mobs should stick to you like glue. Only crappy thing is the cost. If you have 60 runic power on typically an inital pull, you are doing something wrong.

edit: Spec'd into this and it's worth it. Great skill combined with Deathchill then a Howling Blast. Get crits upwards of 20k.

Why is everyone overlooking the most important part of this ability tanking wise ?

That's probably the most important trait for this skill, Frost Fever is a DoT that deals dmg while the mobs you are tanking are staying in one place CCd, efectively making this a skill comparable to paladin's Consacration(wich btw should tick for the same or less than Frost Fever), now knowing that let's look at this skill as an opener(1 min CD is fast enough to be up every pull unless you're running with awesome DPS) folowed by a Howling Blast, it just spells awesomeness, and especially in today's Naxxramas where everyone is AOE happy, pulling packs w/o CC and aoeing them down.

Imho the only bad part of this skill from a tanking PoV is the CD wich could use some shortening to it.

this talent is also very very nice tool to aoe interrupt non-bosses (old kingdom trash anyone?)
since DK's usually have more trouble with trash than with bosses (wel that is if your raid knows how to heal)
i find this talent to be overly usefull in a lot of situations. Definatly worth the 1 point for me.

It seems that this talent is almost never taken for DPS. I understand that the frost tree has great tanking viability, but there are many dps talents in frost that make it a viable dps spec. For the final talent point in a build, I think it should have a bit more DPS applicability. As far as tanking goes, it's VERY situational, almost to the point of uselessness. PvP... Yea, this skill might get the nerfbat for that....

If I had 1 more point I might get this, but at the moment it seems practically worthless for instance tanking. lasts only 10 sec making it pretty worthless for cc, not to mention I highly doubt you'll manage 60 RP early enough after a bad pull to make it worthwhile. if they increased the duration to mabye a minute, removed the RP cost and the disease causing effect, and mabye increased the CD, I could see it being worthwhile.

I just specced this yesterday to use for pvp (mainly for my arena team). I've been running WG and BGs all day to see how well it works.

It's a very strong talent and well worth the point. firstly, it procs chillblains. so if someone breaks it the player is still suffering from snare. It also interupts casting. I noticed people seemed a little peplexed by the ability, a lot of them didn't know what it was or were waiting for me to break it with dps. they waited a few seconds before trinketing; this hesitation means a lot in pvp.

I'll be running it in my 3v3 soon and my 2v2 but I expect with vent up and good team timing it will prove to be a really powerful arena tool. since it doesn't share dr with a lot of cc you can use this to force a better cc on a player that's already trinketed out of HC.

edit: also as of 3.08 this talent now only costs 40 runic power.

This spell puts you out of combat, but the mobs don't reset; so when you think you've gotten away from some mobs using this spell because you are out of combat, keep running.

Having trouble deciding to take this for Raid Tanking or not, even IF these massive 83 elites are not immune to the Freeze effect, the chance that one of your dps members will end up AOE'ing or hitting the target will garuntee this Freeze to last as long as it would if they were immune, though it CAN act as a "hey hey, get back here" or a spell interuption.

Then I read the AOE Frost Fever, this saves you from using Pestilence, but with Blood of the North awarding a Death Rune (talent 5/5) I decided to go with that setup and just stick with Death and Decay.

Added: Confirmed that the Freeze effect doesn't work on most targets in End-Game raids, and Pestilence covers a much larger range than this spell.

I started a DW frost undead and after leveling in blood on my other DKs it felt like I died way too much. I picked this up.
1) Pull a large mob
2) Kill as many as you can.
3) Hungering Cold
4) Cannibalize!

I love it in a FFA arena or something where everything is too hectic and you just want a breather to collect your thoughts or are trying to stop a fight, mixed with Warstomp, Chains of Ice, and Death Grip I am a great fight breaker.

I wonder why this talent has a "rank 1"?

It seems like this is the only rank and if the talent was meant to have additional ranks I can't imagine how it would be different from rank 1.

Don't rely on this spell as a CC when your weapon is enchanted with Rune of Razorice. It will inflict some damage via Razor Frost, breaking the freeze effect almost instantly.

pvp wise this has a lot of synergy with priests and mages, and a lot of other cc based classes

first off, this ability doesnt seem to share DR with anything other than itself (maybe hunter traps?) and so easy to catch someone and win a game, for example, with a priest, its fairly easy to make someone (or multiple people) blow their trinket when they get feared, so if you save your HC for then, you can get in some good 2v1, or even 3v1 for 10sec (perfect if you have an addon like gladius to track trinket use)...

pretty simple way to apply that in most scenarios but obviously save it to the end since there wont be any easy way to remove frost fever that breaks other CC (except a mage with the poly glyph), pretty much fear is a good CC to use if they trinket'ed the ice since the disease wont be enough to break the fear

as the above poster said, razorice breaks it due to its mechanics (this happened with rogue's poisons breaking their own gouge instantly), basically, the bonus damage occurs after instead of before the effect breaking the ice with regular frost damage... so basically if you plan on using HC, stick to other runeforges, pretty much go with cinderglacier or something else if you already have fallen crusader for DW

10yard radius also means it covers a lot of ground, able to catch a lot in it, if you plan on using HC defensively, hunter/mage/boomkin/lock pets are usually the best to shut down, can even set it up to let you healer leave combat to drink

next, devouring plague doesnt break it, along with other dk diseases if you ever happen to be running with more than 1 dk lol (its quite devastating to pair up a frost and unholy dk, just too bad it isnt practical), helps when you can burn someone down and CC then at the same time

the debuff is magic, so in pvp, just remember who you are using it on and if the opponent can dispel it easily or not (priests=easy to dispel magic ignoring the disease, pala/shaman=may dispel diseases first by accident and buy you time, druid=cant dispel magic or diseases)

finally, this does count the opponent as frozen so can give mages another quick shatter combo

TL:DR, use it on people who trinket'ed or as an oh $%^& button in pvp, dont use razorice if you are speced into it

This is very useful for tanking also for spell interrupt.
For example, you have just interrupted a nasty spell and now your interrupt is on CD. Then you switch to another target which also starts casting a long hard hitting spell. You wait for it nearly to finish and pop Hungering Cold. Mob will have to start casting again and your ordinary interrupt is now off CD.

Am I the only one who finds the "Purges the earth around the Death Knight of all heat" part of the spell's description awesome?

To me, Hungering Cold is the very essence of a Frost Death Knight's mastery over the element. While there's just the usual in-game casting animation for this, I prefer to imagine myself kneeling and driving my blade deep into the ground as the spell is unleashed -- similarly as Arthas did in WotLK cinematic when breaking Sindragosa free from the glacier.

You forgot about something (if I'm right). It says purges the earth of all heat :it should mean that it can break the hellfire and consecration effects (not speaking of other AoEs ). Once it happened with me and it cancelled a hellfire (thus saving my life) and i think it was because the hungering cold....,but that is also possible that it was happened by another thing but i can't have tested it more times should it work? I hope yes because in that case it would make this talent (for me) not just awesome but perfect!
