Patchnotes of 2.4: "Emberstorm now also reduces the cast time of your Incinerate spell by 2/4/6/8/10%." Which means Incinerate will be a 2.25 sec cast if you choose to go the fire route. Interesting change!

In a raid situation, I'd still have to go with Destro-Shadow over Destro-Fire.

Debuffs that support Fire:
Curse of Elements - 10%
Misery - 5%
Improved Scorch - 15%
Total Debuffs: 30% increased Damage.

Debuffs that support Shadow:
Curse of Shadow - 10%
Misery - 5%
Shadow Weaving - 10%
Improved Shadow Bolt - 20%
Total Debuffs: 45% increased Damage.

Not to mention that Improved Shadow Bolt increases damage from ALL sources of shadow until 4 direct damage shadow effects have been applied (or the timer runs out). The increased damage done in that time will more than overshadow (no pun intended) the slight reduced cast time on Incinerate (which has a lower co-efficient than Shadow Bolt to begin with).

With even as little as 2 (knowledgeable) Locks in your raid, the debuff should be up most of the time.

While the change may prove superior 1-on-1 (the burst damage is nice), Shadow simply has more to offer in larger set-ups.

The 10% bonus fire damage from this talent is applied BEFORE +fire damage, thus it is a static increase of about 50-70 damage per Incinerate (assuming Immolate is present on the target), and does not scale w/ your gear.

This means, of course, that as your spell damage gets higher and higher the benefit from ISB eventually outshines this talent, because ISB increases shadow damage RECEIVED and thus is applied after +shadow damage. Even though the imp sacrifice buff, Burning Wish, is applied AFTER +fire damage, the succubus buff, Touch of Shadow, is also applied after damage, and so has no bearing on the comparison.

But, I still prefer fire because it's a little more fun than spamming my "1" key. So even though I admit that Shadowbolt spam eventually trumps all for maximizing DPS, I still think it's boring. Also, I'll note that it's very easy to take both ISB AND this talent while also taking all the other core destro talents. Most locks that choose to go full shadow take Nether Protection or Soul Leech, which are situational/marginally useful at best. By taking ISB along w/ this talent, you ensure that you can easily switch to shadow damage on fights where there is a fire resistance or immunity, or fights (like Netherspite) where you'll find yourself draining life a lot.

Is there no shadow damage talent equivalent to this? Thus making destro locks fire damage better than their shadow until, that is, they have a lot of spell damage? What if said lock had, say, 800 shadow spell damage and 600 average spell damage. Would fire still be better?

lock fire spec gains its overpower at 1100 spelldamage 30% crit and ofc 202 HR, if your under that unbuffed 21/40 fire isnt your spec

According to the 3.0.3 patch notes, the damage bonus for Emberstorm has been increased from 10% at the cap to 15%.

in the build I have in mind now, I'm tied with either:

5/5 Demonic Tactics = 10% crit chance + 3/5 Ember = 9% Fire Dmg and 2.35sec Incinerate

or

3/5 DT = 6% crit + 5/5 Ember = 15% Fire and 2.25sec cast Incinerate

which is better?
