A good soloing talent. Macro it with Sinister Strike like this:

Does pretty decent damage and the disarm helps a bit in a pinch.

I love this talent when going down the combat tree, it greatly helps reduce the damage you can take when soloing, or in pvp. Its like a 10 energy sinister strike when it is up.

I love this talent, but I was combat maces and didnt have it before, now I'm generic combat, and my old evasion button is now this. Hopefully I wont die too many more times before I remember to click evasion instead :x

I'm after thinking that the new Riposte is one of the larger nerfs coming to this already nerf-ridden class with WotLK.

No longer to disarm anyone? What the boop? Instead we "slow the attack speed by 20% for 30 seconds". Well tickle me yellow and call me a daisy, folk! That's pretty much a complete shutdown of a major PvP talent, and therefore a complete shutdown of being able to cause massive headaches to any 2-hand-wielding opponent with the click of a single key.

Guess there's no longer a need for them to train Unarmed any more. Unless, of course, folks start going onto the corporate forums and raise some unholy hell (complete with unruly mobs armed with pitchforks and blazing torches) for them to reconsider.

Yeah. Not many people use this due to it's major cost. And with this change, damn few people will even consider it.

] Given the below information, my doom-and-gloom is somewhat alleviated. Unfortunately, the operative word is "somewhat". An instant L75 with a 1min CD to replace a possibly L21 skill with a situational trigger and 10sec CD is not a fair trade, particularly not for folks still making the march towards the level cap. For those that are at L75 and higher, this is all well and good. For those not yet up there, it's still a major whack upside the head with a nerf bat. ]

For leveling: as a lvl 20 rogue you'll have ~10% parry rating, which will make you able to use this every 10th time you get hit - this will make it very useful, especially against quick-hitting mobs, or dual wielding mobs... I'd say it worths the talent point :)

Could anyone tell me what the basic parry rating for a rogue is at lvl 70?

EDIT: The parry chance mentioned is including the talent needed to get riposte!

adds a combo point now, it also benefits from lethality (30% more crit damage) because of that

kind of sucks that it doesnt disarm anymore, but we have dismantle which is 10x better

I specced Riposte as soon as I could while leveling. It was an ability I wanted as soon as I looked at the Combat tree as a newb, and I liked the idea of the counter-attacking rogue. It was always fun to hit mobs and enemy players with it. I kept it almost all the way to level 80.

But I recently chose to respec it out.

As stated earlier, a rogue should focus more on offense than defense for group PvE, heroics and raids. Besides working with a tank, you'll also be keeping the heat off yourself with Tricks of the Trade and Feint (yes, it has a use now).

Riposte takes 1 slot on your bar and is an activated ability. Consider how crowded an action bar is at level 80 and how mindful you have to be of multiple things in combat. You'll be packing essential rogue abilities, leaving little or no room for Riposte. And even if you select combat display options to show when Riposte is readily available, you'll still be watching out for when you can use it. Riposte is clutter on your bar and a distraction to its player.

It costs 4 talent points to buy, which can be used on more powerful, higher-tiered talents. Compare it to Unfair Advantage which only asks for 2 points. Unfair Advantage also procs more often, especially against multiple mobs, and automatically works rather than being activated.

Interestingly, Riposte doesn't synergize well with Unfair Advantage. Riposte slows your opponent's attacks- you're receiving less damage but are also doing less damage using UA. Similarly, some players boost their UA with Evasion and/or Ghostly Strike. While your debuffed foe attacks less often, your dodge bonus from Evasion and/or Ghostly Strike and UA opportunities they provde tick away.

The main point of using Riposte prior to WotLK was its Disarm effect, which was given to Disarm. Disarm is proactive, while Riposte is reactive.

Similarly, comparing Ghostly Strike with Riposte: the former is also proactive. It may cost more Energy, but you get to use it immediately.

A successfully stunlock of a mob or enemy player doesn't need Riposte in any way.

Lastly, it's been said that Riposte is meant for PvP. Even when switching between the necessary abilities between a PvE and PvP spec, Riposte is just an extra, not-so-powerful trick at best, or a hassle and distraction at worst.

If you want more defense for your rogue, there's nothing wrong with picking up Deflection 3, but you might as well skip Riposte afterwards in favor of other stuff.

While the above poster is correct about riposte concerning a raiding environment, this skill still has it's uses even with a cluttered action bar in solo PvE and PvP situations, despite it's situational usage.

There is a very specific sound that indicates when riposte is available, removing the need to keep an eye on it's icon. Also, if you have decent energy management skills (not constantly spamming sinister strike) you will have the energy to use this when it becomes available.

There are a lot of UI replacements that will allow you to configure the key bindings to your preference. If you keep your main attacks SS/Shiv etc... in a neat key cluster, you can include riposte in this cluster and it will only be a short finger movement away.

I found skeletons, zombies and ghouls deal more damage disarmed than with a weapon. You expect an easier kill.. and they tear you to shreads instead. Don't use it against these type of monsters.

1. Usually goes off at least a couple times every fight, doing about the same or more damage than Sinister Strike.
2. Makes fighting armed humaniods a breeze.
3. In duels, disarming another rogue essentially ends the fight right there.
4. Has an energy cost that is practically free.

Being a lvl 37, you should know this by now, but that's okay. If you go into your interface options, at the bottom you can choose to show 4 more action bars, which is about as many as you will ever need. This gives you a lot more range. You will still have to press them, but you will still have the skill available. Hope this helps!

ya its grey until you parry then it becomes highlighted...it is such a pain when you're on the receiving end of a disarm... it practically kills my rogue.

Please note that the instant nature of this attack (Zero cooldown) has been repaired in patch 1.8. It should now use the 6 second cooldown as intended, which makes me really sad, as I would occasionally get strings of these right after another. Oh well. :)

For those of you Rogues out there, Riposte is awesome. Check out the Riposte Alert addon that is part of luaslinger at http://kehlhet.cx/wiki I use it all the time and it rocks. It simply alerts you when riposte becomes available and you have enough energy to execute. It helps so you dont' have to stress about missing the parry when it happens!

too abd they nerfed this talent, used to have no cooldown.. so whenever you parried a attack you could use it, disarm plus about 200 dmg instant it was mean >:) now it got 6 sec cooldown, thats a bummer : /

i only realised my rogue could the disarm thing in his late 30s (after being disarmed so many times by defias and syndicates, i was practically praying for such a hability!) by re-arranging my talent points; it's freakin' awesome :)

man i LOVE this in PVP. i made a pvp alt (thats right a rogue who would guess o.0) and anyway this ROCKS! sjust run right up to a war fight for a while,parry, riposte then if anyone in the vicinity is hlping you just go after some other war / pally/hunter cuz all they can do iss meele(but how can they w/o a weap ) :)

Basically, it uses riposte whenever it is available. So, while you are spamming ss, you'll automatically use riposte. Have fun!

This is really another nice skill and very generically useful.

This is skill is mostly useful for single weapon wielding attackers (i.e. 2-handers or 1-hander + shield). This WILL remove their main-hand weapon for the duration.
Any skills that depend on having a weapon in the main hand are disabled.

Also useful for non-weapon wielders because the skill does 150% of a normal attack - even to beasts and such.

I used to have this ability and I thought it rocked until I started running into mobs that were immune to disarm plus dont forget Blacksmiths can make a weapon chain that grants immunity to disarm as well so Riposte is one of those moves I have decided to live without Iam specced for mainly subtlety so Ghostly strike has been my most commonly used ability when used raise my chance to dodge to a total of 40% (figure varies depending on your base chance to dodge) pair that with evasion 90% chance to dodge who cares if some one is disarmed if they cant hit you it's all the same so if your not completely combat specced then drop this skill at somepoint

Well daggerman and what are you doing if you encounter a warrior? collect one overpower after another? isn't it better to be assured the warrior can't use any ability or to have a xx% dodge chance = the same "extra" chance for the warrior to hit you. well just a thought. enjoy.

But daggerman is right, there are several ways to become imune to disarm...
If it is a chain on the weapon, or an effect on the gloves.

You dont want to completely rely on an effect, that actually doesnt affect your target at all do you?
Calculating this into your fights is what Blizzard calls balance... or so I heard :D

disarm is countered by: 1. steel weapon chains 2. bloodfang gloves 3. no melee weapon dependency

the disarm isn't the entire point of the attack though; it's more like a nice effect. the damage to energy ratio is absolutely insane--only 10 energy for 150% instant weapon damage!

riposte can really dominate some melee battles; it isn't so effective against pure casters or smart hunters though. it's triggered by parry, and most casters/ranged usually dont try to out-melee melee classes... so g/l w/ all those frost mage and hunter fights as a combat spec; it's gonna be tough!

If your target is immune to disarm (like weapon chain), will it still do the 150% weapon damage?

Remember, this skill is activated whenever ANY attack gets parried by you. Yes, that means you can disarm the hunter after you parry his pet's attack. And yes, you can disarm that mage for laughs after you parry someone else's attack!

disarm the warrior/rogue etc.
he probably doesnt have high unarmed skill (atleast i dont)
that means u are probably going to parry another attack(s)

This skill could potentially cause some serious damage if you're main hand is a slow weapon. Not to mention the disarm as well! Free +50% damage to your next attack =) and the crits... oooooh, the crits! I can't wait, one more level til I get it!

I could be wrong, but I think that you have a several second grace period to use the ability after a parry. Long enough to press the button or click the icon for me.

I disagree. I find it extremely useful. Especially when I get jumped by a warrior and I just chain disarm them. Poor bastards dont know what to do.

On another note, I have an awesome scxript that I use to auto disarm. I'll post it here later, as IM not on my home machine atm.

Far from useless. Instant attack, does 150% weapon damage and disarms... for 10 energy. If you're a combat spec, gotta have it.

Considering that your parry percent should be up around 10, you'll get to use this once or twice a fight.

Yes, it is obviously more useful against Mobs with weapons and other players than it is against non-armed monsters, but it still does good damage for 10 energy.

At level 58 using a Thrash Blade, Riposte criticals do more damage than SS criticals--and SS is powered up to do more damage from aggression.

I think, this is useless, Sometimes is good to disarm opponenet, in PvP, but against creatures without weapon its useless.
I thought that it diarms target automaticly, but you have ti click on it, and this is sometimes hard, you have to be quick...

This ability is incredibly underrated. For a total of 6 talent points you not only double your parry rate, you get an ability *off the global cooldown* that for a mere 10 energy not only does significant damage but just for kicks, reduces incoming damage for a short time. TAKE IT as soon as possible if you are going Combat. It is obviously not meant for a dagger spec though.
