This is particularly useful against foes that have more than one school of magic. I can think of a few such casters that appear in dungeons, and almost every class in PvP that can cast has more than one school.

This also helps give you a margin of error. If you are a bit too late (or even early) with your Shield Bash, it normally would do nothing. With this, you'll still prevent casting for 3 seconds, even though you didn't interrupt a spell.

You can also use this to help prevent any last-second heals. In PvP especially, 3 seconds is a very long time.

If you use a shield often, then this is probably worth picking up. Much later on, this talent pairs well with Spell Reflection to help give you much more control over a battle against a caster.

Used in a proper rotation any prot warr can shut down a caster easily

Charge - > stun
Shield bash -> silence - use shield slam to dispell buffs and do damage
Concussive Blow -> stuns
Spell reflect - catch the caster offguard and they'll own themselves for you - if you use this on a lock you can usually expect a lolcoil. Hello spellreflect :D
If this happens, intercept stun, shield slam away. Ive taken out locks easily using this tactic, although as im sure most are aware its cooldown based and not perfect in group pvp.

In wrath of the lich king this will also increase the damage done by shield slam by 10% which makes it a very worthwile talent.

Cannot wait for the juicy shield slam crits after the expansion.

For the while longer that Tier6 warriors keep their tanking set, this ability will go very well with their 4/8 Onslaught set bonus, Shield Mastery, and 10% Shield block Meta gem. Also, in leveling or in instances, it was never more annoying to wait to interrupt a casting mob on a certain ability then to find out that the mob is gonna cast a different school of magic after you interrupted the first. Now, silence the mana user and pull him when you want him.

The 10% Shield Slam damage coupled with this talent is a great indication that the designers liked 4/8 Onslaught armor's set bonus and that it was good enough to put into a talent. (The other set bonus that comes to mind is 5/8 Wrath armor, which made an ability cost 5 less rage. After we dumped that set, the talent Focused Rage gave us 3 less rage cost all of our offensive abilities.)

I like talents such as these because it's as if you were still wearing the old armor for the bonuses it provided while wearing better armor and reaping those bonuses with it.

As of the latest WotLK Beta build (September 5 2008) this talent now also affects the new Heroic Throw ability, which makes it an amazing all-around talent. In PvP you'll be able to silence casters from 30 yards away(!) and in PvE it will be a huge help in pulling caster mobs.

I picked up this talent to check it out thinking that 100% chance to increase Shield Slam damage by 10% every 12 seconds was pretty sweet. And it is. However, while fighting a silence-immune mob, I noticed that they were not getting the Gag Order debuff. So is it safe to assume that if they are immune to silence I won't be getting the extra Shield Slam damage? I'm really just looking at it in a boss fight/threat perspective. Don't really care about the silence much.

This talent gives prot warriors a gimped version of rogues' Deadly Throw (with BC PvP gloves, the ability gains a spell interrupt ability). This should make prot warriors better against casters and healers, because even with Spell Reflect, prot warriors strength is tanking melee damage since armor doesn't mitigate spell damage. This helps even the scores against casters.

This gives prot warriors quite a few ways to interrupt casts in defensive stance now:
Shield Bash - 12 sec CD
Heroic Throw - 1 min CD
Concussive Blow - 45 sec CD
Shockwave - 20 sec CD
Charge Stun - 15 sec CD
Intimidating Shout - 3 min CD
Revenge Stun (only 50% of the time) - 5 sec CD

It shouldn't be hard to make a interrupt rotation with all those abilities.

This talent not only gives a silence to your Heroic Throw, but also to your Shattering Throw. A nice boon since mages are annoyed by silence, and paladins use their bubble for healing mostly.

Edit: this could not be intended and removed into one of the comming patches, anyway, nothing as such is reported in 3.2 nor in any hotfixes in 3.1
