These mobs have been altered some from beta > live, so here's an update. This quest is given as a followup to Before the Gate of Horror. The quest Shatter the Shards becomes available at the same time at this quest and should be done concurrently.

Both types of mobs can be found on the upper levels of Corp'rethar. They both have 88k hitpoints and can be snared/stunned. With a little patience ranged classes should be fine soloing these mobs. Melee types will probably want to find a tank or healer.

The Corp'rethar Guardians look like mini-Gluth's, they're melee-only mobs with no special abilities. They hit hard (around 5k on cloth) and apply a disease that has a Nature damage DoT and increases physical damage taken. Harbingers of Horror are pretty standard Liches (Frost Armor, casts Frostbolt and Fear). They also melee for about 5k on cloth and Frostbolt for around 4.5k. With a few slows, stuns, and interrupts these guys are a pushover, but use caution.

you can kill both mobs easily as a moonkin,

- Corp'rethar Guardian: root - starfire - root starfire

- Harbinger of Horror : this one is a caster: so launch a starfire, dot him, and run around pillar in travel form to prevent him from casting, if it touches you, put some hot & run around pillars again ^^

if you have problems and must switch to another pillar (repop of the dog), launch a starfall, and don't forget to use 'force of nature', each time it is up.

Coords are the same as the shards for Shatter The Shards (Between 45,70 to 50,66, 2nd and 3rd levels of the bridge/pathway)

Solo'd it as a prot warrior:
* Guardians do a disease bite, wasn't a big deal with enraged regen.
* Harbingers cast a few frost spells, none of them are reflectable, but can be interrupted/silenced (shield bash, gag order + heroic throw). It says they fear under abilities, but I didn't catch any... I'm assuming they fear if you're grouped with people (2nd on threat, etc).
* Both elites are stunnable (concussion blow, shockwave, charge).

Soloable as a dk with pretty good gear. The dogs are a little challenging, as they can crit for about 5-6k. They are vulnerable to all snares and stuns though, so most classes will be able to solo them I would imagine.

Also, watch out for the lich ones, they knockback about 40 yards, so if you are on the higher ledge, better get your back to a wall. I learned this one the hard way.

Just solo them... Simple and easy as a lock i am :)
Take the buff for 15% extra movement speed and kite them around the pillars in the area... took me like 3-4 min for each but i complete that alone... Dots and run! :P

A few notes for all classes:

1) As others have mentioned, when you're fighting Harbinger's of Horror, make sure you are not standing to the side of them. They will be happy to knockback you to a nasty falling death.

2) If you're kiting anything, do not leave the actual structure. If you step off the end of the gate onto the ground, you will leave the phase that the elites are in, and they will drop combat with you and reset.

3) Keep your camera zoomed out to ensure that you do not back up into/get knocked into any other mobs.

Some Death Knight specific notes:

I solo'd this quest as an level 80 unholy Death Knight with raid-quality tanking gear, but I expect it could be done with less gear/a different spec.

The Corp'rethar Guardians are extremely easy to kill, if you are familiar with Chains of Ice kiting. If done right, you can kill them without ever taking any damage (although it might take a few minutes).

I tried kiting the Harbingers of Horror also, but I found myself getting pelted with Frostbolts through pillars and getting knocked off the side a lot. My winning strategy was to face them head-on while interrupting all of their Frostbolts, which negates a large portion of their damage. This will also have the beneficial side effect of keeping their AoE knockback on cooldown most of the time. If one does manage to knock you back, get ready to Strangulate it (Blood Tap if necessary), as it will probably try to Frostbolt you as you run back. I believe this general strategy would probably work for any melee class with a consistent interrupt and either the ability to stun, or the ability to heal.

To kill the horrors as a priest I would cast mind blast -> Shackle and do this over and over again. Its slow, but your shackle stops him from casting spells and he doesn't regen. This is the best/cleanest way for a priest to solo the horrors.

EDIT: The same tactic goes for the dogs as well. Although you can kill them quicker with Mindblast->Mind Flay->Shackle. As long as you put distance between you and the dog.

This is indeed soloable as a frostfire mage, had some probs with the Harbinger of Horror's as they throw frostbolts that slows your movement more ofthen then you can counterspell, it's still possible with smart use of Mirror Images thou, and makes it a walk in the park if you have the Frost Resist Gear togheter with Mage Armor, wich makes you resist most of the frostbolts and not get affected by the slow effects.

This appears to be the very end of the extremely long chains of quests in Icecrown, culminating in the 5-man group quests offered by Thassarian(A) and Koltira Deathweaver(H); at least until future patches (> 3.0.3) The other group quests that are offered end with repeatable daily versions of the group quests Neutralizing the Plague(A)/(H) and No Rest For The Wicked(A)/(H).

Solo'd as a Frost DK in tanking gear. Keep the cd's down. A lot of these got me down to about 20% health (or less). The dogs are the tricky ones...

As an 80 affliction lock, this is the first group quest in Northrend that I actually needed a group for. I highly recommend a group, lest you spend a considerable amount of time trying to solo it. A rogue, mage, DK, and myself did this quest in about 10 mins. Easy enough; just run along the platform that makes up the Corprethar gate and you should find most, if not all of them on the top. There is a second platform directly below the first one, that contains the needed mobs. Don't waste time waiting for respawns, just go to the lower platform.

This is the penultimate quest in Icecrown, and I suspect it is close to, if not the, lead in to Icecrown Citadel. The quest description mentions the Corprethar Gaurdians to be the last line of defense into Icecrown Citadel so take it as you will.

Soloed as a lvl 80 Affliction Warlock. The Harbingers are fearable and to kill the Guardians just throw on a Fate Rune of Fleet Feet and kite away.

Soloable as a Moonkin, just root and pewpew, recast roots when they wear off for the melee.

I couldn't get a group so I had to solo. This is what I did (shadow priest)

Mind Blast + Shadow Word: Death + Shakle Undead

Rinse and repeat. Took ages, but no one would help me. So I hope this helps fellow priests out there.

Against Harbingers as boomkin, just spam starfire + roots, with an ocasional lifebloom to heal tru the ice lances w/e....

In regards to those who are indicating above that this quest chain ends abruptly:

I have a feeling that this is leading into a world event for when the patch finally comes that opens Icecrown Citadel up to raiding, as the reference to the "final assault" would lead me to believe. Rather than a simple "here's the patch, there's the instance portal, go have fun" type roll-out, I imagine that we're going to see a cooperative effort by both factions similar to the opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj or the Isle of Quel'Danis progression where everyone has to accumulate massive amounts of items and do repeatable quests thousands of times over for the actual opening of Icecrown. The abrupt ending of the quest chain, then, is not an oversight by Blizzard but a setup for the continuation of the chain to occur once the content is introduced into the game. The same thing occurs with the Uldaman platinum disks quest chain that leads to Uldum in far-southern Tanaris, with the promise of "a future task" to complete that has not yet occurred.

Of course, keep in mind there is a gigantic structure roughly the size of Utgarde Pinnacle in far western Icecrown (Balargarde Fortress) that is obviously the site for a future instance or set of instances (seeing as how it has no entrances into it despite its considerable bulk) so there appears to be plenty of future content to be added before we even get to take on Arthas. Even the much-anticipated 3.1.0 patch with the Ulduar raid instance is not even on the PTRs as of this writing, so don't expect to see what Blizzard has planned for quite a while yet.

EDIT: As of 3.2.0, we now know that the Argent Tournament is set up to serve as a "training exercise" for both Alliance and Horde characters to prepare them for the invasion of Icecrown. It still remains to be seen whether there will be a world-event for the actual opening of Icecrown Citadel itself.

Just soloed as an Arcane mage, here is how I did it:
Corp'rethar Guardian: was simple snare&kite tactics, slow, arcane barrage, frostnova is all I used.
When I was running near the end of the structure or other elite mob I frost nova'ed them and ran around them to start running in opposite direction.

Harbinger of Horror: those seem a bit more tricky, had mage's armor on to mitigate as much as their frostbolt damage as possible, counterspelling their frostbolts, slowing them, and kiting was the key. Also used mirror images when things became nasty.

This quest look bugged for me, I went to the location and killeg the dogs, then I killed 3 of the 5 liches and had to logout, when I was back I couldn't see any mob in the place, no lich, no dogs and no casters.
Abandoned the quest, restarted and still nothing.

The mobs dissapear as soon as i get into the corprear gate zone. so i cant even get close to kill them its like im phased out. the only possible reason is either because I did a quest that phases them/me out and therfore i cant see them. or the other possiblity is that with the addition of the argent tournament. the area use for the quest https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=13856 and https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=13862 causes player to phase. I'm going to put in a ticket or a thread on blizz but just wanna know if anyone is having this problem.

So, i don't know if this is a bug or not, but I easily solo'd the Harbinger of Horrors as a tree spec druid with only my balance spells.

Each time I would root the Horrors from *behind* they would stay facing the other direction as long as I did not break root. Also, it seems that they will only cast their ranged spells if they are facing you....

So the trick was to simply cast root from behind and then spam a low enough wrath that it wouldn't break the root followed by another root. This way they stayed perma-rooted and were never able to turn around. So i just spent the whole time wrathing him down without ever getting hit with any spells or attacks what so ever.

Can someone else confirm that they were also able to do this? I didn't discover this till my last two, but it worked perfect on both of them.

- The guardians were simple root and cast, no problems at all.

Solo'd as fury in prot gear although it does suck.

Corp'rethar Guardian - These are killable but very, very annoying. They melee decently fast, hit somewhat hard (for a quest mob anyway) and have 2 debuffs, mortal wound and a nature damage dot (forget the name). Mortal wound does the exact same thing as the same debuff from the gluth fight...imagine that, mobs that look like gluth and do the same thing >.> As this build the key to solo'ing them is to use BT on cooldown while keeping them debuffed. When your stacks reach around 5, hamstring them and kite...but wait for the duration to reach around 6s left (it re-applies at 4 seconds). Kite them till it's off. When it's off use intercept to stun them, get a free hit in, and go defensive. Use enraged regen ONLY when the stacks fall off. Save pots and things for this as well, and be smart with your shield wall. Shield block is a life-saver. They take a while to kill as this build but it's doable.

Harbinger of Horror - Generic liches, they cast frostbolt (interruptable, not reflectable), ice armor (dispellable, the chill is reflectable), and have a fairly annoying ability called lich slap. This ability does a fair amount of damage and sends you flying backwards about 40 yards. Make sure your back isn't to an edge or you're about to die. Just debuff, bt on cooldown, shield bash frostbolt and intercept after lich slap. Shield slam the debuff off, and they'll die eventually. When they get low they seem to lich slap a lot more just try to stay in range to interrupt frostbolts, use shield wall as necessary. These mobs are stunnable.

You CAN solo this as fury or prot, but I'd recommend finding a healer or another DPS because it's slow and painful to solo.

Oh and you can't interrupt every frostbolt from the harbingers so be prepared to use some cooldowns.

Easily solo'd as a 54/17 PVP afflic warlock. First of all I recommend doing this on the upper most level of the gate. Harbingers of Horror can be simply drain tanked. I used PVP gear and had a little over 20k HP. PVP gear is not a must but Demon Armor is. I didn't even have to use void sac or healthstone but depending on your HP you might.

Corp'rethar Guardians can be easily CoEx kited. There's 2 ways to do this. You can clear out all the Harbingers as you need them for the quest anyway and then kite Guardians along this route. You can also kite them between two Harbingers by utilizing Demonic Teleport on your kiting path then teleporting behind the Guardian and running in the opposite direction.

While completing this quest, I encountered something rather strange. The rest of my party vanished from me as soon as they stepped onto the bridge. There doesn't seem to be any pre-requisite quests and I was able to get it from the quest giver. Had anyone else had this problem? I was able to get the benefits from killing the same targets as them. I even helped out as all I could see was their dots.

For all:

* Guardians: stack a DoT on you so heal immediately after it's dead if you're close.

* Harbingers: if you don't want to risk getting knocked off the ledge, kill the ones on the middle level, not the top. There are 1 at each end of the walkway on a huge platform, also suitable for kiting. Just place yourself in a way that won't get you knocked to the edge of the platform so that you don't have to worry about adds.

Paladins (or at least Ret paladins) wanting to solo:

* Seal of Justice interrupts work on these mobs and seemed to help more than the damage from SoC/SoV
* Repentance, Hammer of Justice and Holy Wrath all work properly as interrupts
* Turn Undead works on both mobs as a fear, use it to heal up or otherwise save your butt.

... For the Harbingers, save your interrupts for Frostbolt. Don't worry about the knockback, it actually gives you time to heal up. As long as you interrupt most of the Frostbolts these guys will be easier than the Guardians.

... For the Guardians, use Turn Undead to give yourself some healing respite.

... I took Divine Plea off my FCFS spam bar to keep it from making my heals suck

... I took Divine Storm off my FCFS spam bar to keep my mana up without Divine Plea

... Seal of Light for some extra heals

These mobs were refreshing. Yeah, it's supposed to be a group quest, but as a solo challenge they remind you to actually use your abilities wisely in PvE instead of just facerolling like most mobs.

Soloed this as a shadow priest in pvp gear.

-Vampiric Embrace
- Mind Blast
- Death
- Shackle Undead
(While theyr shackled you can heal and regen mana)
- Repeat

Tips:
Use shield at all times when you doing this on the Guardians (Beasts/"Dogs") because if the shackle fails they will take half you health quite easily.
Keep shackle and you can heal/regen mana.

Do not DoT at all, since any damage will break the shackle and you will most likely die.

I just soloed this quest as a poorly geared holy/disc priest, the easymode way.
I really laughed when I saw they aren't immune to shackle undead.
All I did was smite and shackle. So much fun to see them try to cast/hit me.
I remember how hard this quest was on my dk.... and now how easy it is on a priest.
It takes a while but honestly, it's alot of fun :)

I soloed this as a BM hunter in heroic 5-man dungeon gear, plus gear that you can buy with only emblems of triumph (sorry, I do not now anything about tiers so I do not know which one this is). I also have that glyph (glyph of mend pet or glyph of mending, not sure which one) that increases the mending you do by 40%.

I had a tenacity pet out, a Rhino.

I send my pet in with mend pet on, and made sure I had it on the whole fight. The harbringers of horror casted frostbolts on me sometimes while I didn't even have threat, which was kinda weird, but did not do that much damage. I did use kill command and bestial wrath. Further just the usual stuff.. serpent sting, arcane shot, steady shot, kill shot at the end. The corp'rethar guardians killed my pet when they were at roughly 5%, but I simply froze them, revived pet, mended it, and killed them.

Actually, this quest was quite easy :)

Edit: the last corp'rethar guardian I tried to kill critted like hell... I simply let my pet die and feigned death. And tried again.

I don't know if it's a bug, but the healing debuff from the guardians can NOT be removed by paladin bubble. I thought "uh okay, I'll just let him stack 6 times or so, then bubble and laugh in his face". Had to kite to kill since I did nearly no healing at the end. Of course, this can be avoided by kiting/timing stuns earlier.

this can be soloed by any decently geared, competent paladin, of any spec. avenging wrath has a low enough cd to use it, but you may want to save the debuff for bubble.

for the guardians:
apply sacred shield, remove the disease asap, heal yourself efficiently (instant FoL really helps), bubble at the end, if necessary.

for the harbringers:
apply frost presence (it seems to work very well, i fully resisted many of the spells), heal (instant FoL).

relatively easy if you know how to play the class. the stuns/interrupts/fears can also help, but i find it a challenge to not use them.

Description

Corp'rethar, called the Horror Gate. It is the last barrier between us and the Icecrown Citadel. It waits to the south of the Ironwall Rampart, beyond the glacier and the Conflagration. By the time our troops reach it, they will be exhausted and worse.

We must weaken its defenses, or our army's strength will break upon its walls.

Its battlements are manned by some of the Lich King's fiercest and most zealous servants. Do all you can to destroy these guardians and hope it is enough.
